Question

Hello,

This is the definitive Best Backup Software of 2024 official thread.

It covers both free and commercial backup software, as well as those built into or bundled with operating systems.  Use this as a starting point for researching back-up software.

The previous year's thread can be found here.

If your choice of a back-up solution is not listed, please choose the appropriate Other option(s) and specify in the comments.  The poll is multiple choice, so if you use more than one solution, you can select all of those.  Be sure to mention which ones you use in the comments.

Regards,

I dont tend to backup at an OS level anymore, just my data, i copy to multiple locations such as my NAS, Bluray disks and DropBox.

For a lot of files where i need to ensure the integrity i use WinRar and multiple recovery files to checksum the files and to be able to recover.

-General boot drive imaging occasionally = Clonezilla (which I use to image boot drive to a image file on another one of my hard drives. even on my backup computers I use the Samba share on my main PC to store the images made from the backup computers I have. but on my main PC ill usually image the hard drive roughly once every 1-2 months or so. but currently I have 139 days+ of uptime (which is my all-time personal best) so I have not imaged it in quite a while)

-General data backup = manual copy/paste in file manager to different hard drives (along with occasional burning to DVD for higher importance data backup as I still think quality optical media is one of the best options for long term data backup (long term, say at least 10-20+ years)).

that's what I have been doing a rather long time now and will likely continue to do for the foreseeable future ;)

Where to start.

I use Cobain backup for some important files. I use Windows backup to backup the occasional computer, Windows home server backup for family stuff, and some homemade scripts to back up the occasional VM.

All important data is on OneDrive for Business and OneDrive gets backed up to the NAS. Very long term data goes on optical media and also goes to AWS Glacier.

Overall I think I'm pretty well protected.

My favorite backup software for 2024 is a combination of different tools to meet various needs. I use:

BackBlaze for continuous and reliable cloud backups. It's user-friendly and offers unlimited storage, making it perfect for ensuring my data is always secure.

Apple Time Machine for seamless and automatic backups on my Mac. It integrates perfectly with macOS and provides easy access to historical versions of my files.

Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office (formerly True Image) for its robust and comprehensive backup solutions, including disk cloning and ransomware protection.

FreeFileSync for quick and efficient file synchronization between my external hard drives and NAS. It's open-source and highly customizable, making it ideal for my specific backup needs.

Combining these solutions ensures that my data is always backed up securely, both locally and in the cloud, providing me with peace of mind and easy recovery options.

EaseUS Todo Backup for a few years now and it has NEVER failed on me.  But I used to use Macrium Reflect (Paid version before) and it was also very good.

    • This is why competition must exist. Finally, pressure is mounting on Microsoft to move in the right direction.
    • Microsoft is making Windows 11's context menus faster, simpler, and configurable by Taras Buria Five years ago, Windows 11 introduced redesigned context menus, offering users a simpler, more modern design. However, customers quickly discovered that the new menus leave a lot to be desired. Many are unhappy with performance (they are really slow), while others dislike the double-layed design, where many options are hidden behind the "Show more options" button. In addition, over the years, menus became cluttered and overloaded. While Microsoft has already fixed plenty of pain points across Windows 11, context menus remain mostly unchanged. Fortunately, Microsoft is finally listening. Marcus Ash, Design and Research Lead for Windows at Microsoft, responded to a tweet on X, confirming that the company is working on fixing Windows 11's context menus. Reworked context menus are supposed to be faster, simpler by default, and "configurable to what you use most." What the latter means is unknown, just like whether Microsoft plans to keep the classic menu alongside the modern one, but according to Marcus, the wait should finally be over soon, as he promised to "share our approach soon." Improved context menus will most likely appear first in Windows 11 preview builds in the Experimental Channel. While we wait for Microsoft to release them, you can try fixing context menus on your PC with a simple tool called Windows 11 Context Menu Manager. It lets you disable entries you do not need, not only cleaning up context menus, but also making them significantly faster. Microsoft has already improved Windows 11's Start menu and taskbar, so hopefully it will address user criticism of the context menu as well. Stay tuned for new Windows 11 preview builds, which usually arrive every Friday.

    • We do it all the time on our IT Service desk mailbox to add a reference, in the subject line, once it's been logged and then it's filed into the appropriate sub-folder. Other companies probably do the same thing.
