Hello friends, I am looking for a new pc something powerful enough to do the following. Run Windows 11 Pro, QuickBooks, Office Suite, AutoCAD, Adobe Acrobat Pro ,browse the web and be networked between 1 other computer.  I have been looking at these mini pc's and wondering if they would be capable of doing what I am asking.  Seems to have around 16-32 gb of ram, 512-2tb of ssd and either the i9 wit

-GEEKOM XT12 Pro Mini PC, 12th Gen Intel i9-12900H NUC12 Mini Computers(14C/20T,Up to 5GHz), 32GB DDR4 RAM & 1TB PCIe Gen 4 SSD Mini PC Windows 11 Pro, 8K/Quad Display/USB4.0/WiFi 6E/BT5.2/2.5G LAN

-BOSGAME Gaming Mini PC Ryzen 7 7840HS Windows 11 Pro Mini Computers, Radeon 780M GPU 32B DDR5+1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD, Built-in Dual Speakers, USB4 *2, WiFi 6/BT 5.2, Dual 2.5GbE LAN

I was leaning toward these just cause of the size and it seems like the specs could handle what I am asking.  I was trying to avoid your standard tower, I am open to suggestions as to why these wouldn't be a good choice or if there is something better for the same amount of money.  I am open minded so please provide helpful information, I wasn't sure if I could post the links but you could copy the titles into Amazon and find all of the mini pc's I posted above.

Thank you

I think BeLink's GTR7 would be better for you. Rather than the SER7.

GTR7 has a stronger CPU and more RAM. And you can upgrade the RAM to 64GB.

What price are you looking for? Do you want a eGPU?

AMD wins by a mile in terms of power efficiency, which is important in laptops and mini PCs.

I recommend the Minisforum EliteMini UM780 XTX.

You can get it barebone or configure it with 32 GB DDR5 + 1TB SSD or 64 GB DDR5 + 1 TB SSD

Hi Mockingbird, so you're saying the attached picture is the way to go and this will have no issues running AutoCAD or doing anything else I have listed above?  After purchasing this I should be set for a few years as it seems to be a nice little setup with power?

I would assume, yes. These little guys can pack a punch. See ETA Prine's review:

It should easily be able to handle those tasks, as of today.

I am not going to speculate about the future.

no worries I appreciate the feedback. the task's I have listed are what the computers would be used for daily.  AutoCAD will only be used once/twice a week based off job requests etc. so mainly one will be used for running QuickBooks daily, using Office Suite and surfing the web.  the other will be using for checking mail via Outlook, surfing the web and they using AutoCAD as need during the week. as long as they can handle this which it sounds like no problem then this is the most they will be doing nothing more resource hogging than AutoCAD at times.  that being said I watched the video and believe this should be the right choice, don't need 1tb of ssd but will take that with the 64 gb of ram and call it a day.  thanks for your help and feedback. if you think of anything else, please let me now.

Radeon 780M has about the most powerful graphics that that you are going to find in a mini PC.

Looking at AutoCAD's system requirements, a video card is recommended, but you are not going to find that in a mini PC.

Actually, some Mini-PCs, actually do.. They either have a PCI-e port, or (whatever that new port is called)

I did a chat with AutoCAD asking them to confirm the mini pc specs are compatible and they directed me to there specifications chart.  I need them to verify it will work, it’s the only unknown holding me back from buying the mini pc. I feel like it has to work but need to be sure.

These have discrete graphics and would definitely work.

I didn't realize that these exist or I would have recommended them earlier.

this looks to be the only model available on the company website. unless I get barebone one then I would need to find the memory kit and 1tb ssd, think I could price them cheaper if I bought without?  sorry if these questions are too much I greatly appreciate your help and time.

That one has the Radeon RX 6600M, which is slightly slower than the Radeon RX 6650M on Minisforum website, but it unlikely to make a big difference.

There is also this barebone one with the Radeon RX 6650M.

32 GB memory is recommended for AutoCAD 2025. I doubt that more memory would help, but it certainly wouldn't hurt.

You can go with the barebone and add memory + SSD or buy them pre-installed.

The plus with going barebone is that you get to choose your own memory and SSD (and they might also be cheaper).

Difference SSD, in particular, can make a huge difference in performance.

The minus is that, should an issue arise, you would have to spend time diagnosing whether the issue is with the base PC, the memory, or the SSD.

If you buy the entire PC and it has an issue, you can have the entire PC replaced and don't need to diagnose the issue yourself.

If you have a budget of $1,000 why wouldn't you consider one with a new processor like the Core Ultra that also has an NPU like this for example https://www.acemagic.com/products/acemagic-f2a-intel-core-ultra-5-7-125h-155h-ai-mini-pc?variant=47924989493554 (can be upgraded to 64GB)

AMD also has some mobile NPU chips (I believe the 7940HS) but the features aren't "turned on" in the Windows 11 drivers yet.

Anyway, my point is that if you're spending $1,000 at least get a Mini PC that has the latest CPU with the NPU / AI capabilities, as I am sure it will be of great help with programs like AutoCAD.

It doesn't have discrete graphics.

Discrete graphics with 8GB VRAM are needed to meet the system requirements for AutoCAD.

I would strongly suggest buying via Amazon, and also on a credit card. Look, mistakes happen during manufacturing, parts themselves can be faulty too - but I experienced not only a hardware fault but also HORRENDOUS customer service that was on the verge of being rude. So if you can protect your purchase and better your aftercare options - then sure, do that.

    • One of the strangest galaxies in our Universe could help answer some long overdue questions by Sayan Sen Image by Pixabay via Pexels | Not representative An international team of astronomers led by the Department of Astronomy at Tsinghua University has discovered an unusually metal-poor galaxy that may contain signs of first-generation star formation. The galaxy, named Metal-Pristine Galaxy COSMOS Redshift 3 (MPG-CR3), or CR3, was identified using observations from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), the Very Large Telescope (VLT), and the Subaru Telescope. The findings, published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, describe CR3 as the most metal-poor galaxy known from the period known as "cosmic noon," around 11.5 billion years ago. Cosmic noon refers to a period when the universe was producing stars at its highest rate and galaxies were growing rapidly. In astronomy, "metals" refers to all elements heavier than helium, including oxygen, carbon, and iron. Because CR3 contains so few of these heavier elements, researchers say it closely resembles what scientists expect the earliest galaxies in the universe may have looked like. The discovery is significant because it could offer clues about Population III (Pop III) stars, the first generation of stars thought to have formed after the Big Bang. These stars are believed to have formed from gas made almost entirely of hydrogen and helium, before heavier elements were created inside stars and spread across the universe through supernova explosions. Hence this is why CR3 has been referred to as a "living fossil." Scientists have long believed that Population III stars existed only in the very early universe. As more generations of stars formed and died, they enriched surrounding gas with heavier elements, making the conditions needed for metal-free star formation increasingly rare. Because of this, researchers expected the formation of such stars to have largely ended after the epoch of reionization, a period when radiation from the first stars and galaxies transformed the neutral hydrogen filling the universe and made it largely transparent to ultraviolet light. CR3 appears to challenge that idea. The galaxy was observed at a redshift of z = 3.193 ± 0.016. Redshift measures how much light from a distant object has been stretched as the universe expands and helps astronomers determine how far back in time they are looking. In this case, the redshift corresponds to roughly 11.5 billion years ago during cosmic noon. Although the universe was already several billion years old by that point, CR3 shows characteristics more commonly associated with much earlier galaxies. Observations revealed exceptionally strong emissions from hydrogen and helium, including Lyα, Hα, and He I λ10830. Lyα, or Lyman-alpha emission, is a specific wavelength of light produced by hydrogen and is widely used to study distant galaxies. Hα emission is another hydrogen signature commonly used to trace active star formation, while He I λ10830 is produced by helium and can indicate the presence of very hot, young stars. The measured equivalent widths of EW₀(Lyα) = 822 ± 101 Å and EW₀(Hα) = 2814 ± 327 Å are among the highest ever observed in star-forming galaxies. Equivalent width is a measure of the strength of an emission line relative to the surrounding light, and such large values are typically associated with intense and very recent star formation. At the same time, researchers found no statistically significant detections of metal emission lines, including [O III] λλ4959, 5007 and C IV λλ1548, 1550. Emission lines act as chemical fingerprints that reveal which elements are present in a galaxy. Oxygen and carbon lines are commonly seen in galaxies that have already undergone significant chemical enrichment. Their absence in CR3 suggests an unusually pristine environment. Using abundance calibration methods developed with JWST observations, the team placed a 2σ upper limit on the galaxy's gas-phase metallicity of 12+log(O/H)<6.52, corresponding to less than 0.7% of the Sun's metallicity (Z < 7 × 10⁻³ Z⊙). Gas-phase metallicity measures the abundance of heavy elements in a galaxy's gas. A 2σ upper limit indicates that the true value is very unlikely to be higher than the quoted threshold. Even when accounting for uncertainties in the calibration methods, the most conservative limit remains 12+log(O/H)<6.95, making CR3 the most metal-poor galaxy identified at cosmic noon. The galaxy also appears to contain very little dust. Researchers measured a Lyα/Hα flux ratio of 13.9 ± 2.5, a result that suggests negligible dust attenuation, meaning very little of the galaxy's light is being absorbed or scattered by cosmic dust. Because dust is usually produced by earlier generations of stars, this finding further supports the idea that CR3 has experienced very little chemical enrichment. Further analysis using spectral energy distribution modelling, a technique that compares observed light with theoretical models, suggests that CR3 contains an extremely young stellar population only around 2 million years old. The modelling, which used Population III stellar templates, also indicates the galaxy has a stellar mass of approximately 6.1 × 10⁵ M⊙. The symbol M⊙ represents one solar mass, or the mass of the Sun. One of the key questions raised by the discovery is how such a chemically primitive galaxy could exist in a universe that had already spent billions of years producing heavier elements. To investigate this, the researchers examined CR3's surroundings. Their analysis suggests the galaxy may lie in a slightly underdense environment, with a density contrast of roughly δ ≈ −0.12. An underdense region contains less matter and fewer galaxies than average. The team suggests that this relative isolation may have helped preserve pockets of pristine gas. Metal-rich material expelled from nearby galaxies may never have reached CR3, while the lower rate of galaxy mergers and interactions could have slowed the mixing of enriched gas into the system. If future observations confirm these findings, CR3 could provide some of the strongest evidence yet that first-generation star formation continued well after the epoch of reionization. Such a result would challenge the conventional view that pristine star formation ended by z ≳ 6 and suggest that small pockets of metal-free gas survived much longer than previously thought. Researchers stress that more observations will be needed to determine the galaxy's true nature. Future spectroscopic studies with higher resolution and better signal quality could help confirm whether CR3 is genuinely hosting Population III star formation. The discovery is also expected to encourage searches for other similar galaxies, which could help astronomers better understand how the first stars formed and how galaxies evolved in the early universe. • For me, the fundamental problems with these "smartglasses" is that they really don't work well for people with significant prescriptions and massively up the price if you use attached lenses if they have displays, and if they don't, then they're not actually "smart" anything, rather just connecting to your phone and relaying voice to an AI. In a few cases like this, they throw in small cameras to feed video to the AI. All around, these feel like both a solution looking for a problem, and the problems it tries to solve seem more easily solved by different approaches and designs. Oddly, if the rumours are true, Apple may actually have invented something for once and it kind of does this right: put cameras in ear buds and manage the interface to AI exactly as most of us do: tapping on an ear bud and saying "Hey Google" or "Hey Siri." That makes them compatible with almost everyone, can double up as a hearing assist device, an impaired vision assist device, a "smart" device... and answer your phone and play music. That just seems like a better solution all around.
