Unable to drag and drop files where I want on Windows 11 desktop?

Recommended Posts

So I just upgraded from Windows 10 to Windows 11 23H2 because several Store programs wouldn't start anymore in 10, so I needed a clean install anyway, and I have this odd bug where if I drag something from Phone Link app to anywhere on the desktop I want, it is insteads auto arranged under the Recycle Bin grid of icons.

Auto arrange is off:

This is where I wanted to drag it, just next to the Phone Link window.

Is this another broken feature of Windows 11?

Hello,

Out of curiosity, have you tried running the System File Checker (filename: SFC.EXE), just in case it is some kind of issue with damaged permissions?

Hello,

Ah, I thought it was an in-place upgrade from Windows 10.

Here's a PowerShell script you can try:as well as a program by the same author that you can use to change the grouping on the Downloads directory.

Hopefully, one of them will work for you.

    • I've been using Windows 11 since the day it was released. No complaints whatsoever from me but then again, I always like trying new things. It's been ROCK SOLID running my Dell XPS 8940 desktop.

    • "Users may experience repeated KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE bugchecks after upgrading to this build." This "showstopper" bug/issue is still present for Dev 26200.5651, so NOT QUITE the June 2025 Snapshot for 26200 release but I think we are close to that release so should be within the next couple releases!
