Auto Insurance? (USA only)

Recommended Posts

My current auto insurance company (American Family) has raised my rates by $200 in January, and now raised by another $300 in July.

We have two cars, a Kia and Subaru.

Current monthly payments are at $250 a month...

I been with this company since I was 17, for more then 10 years..

Clean record, I had one accident maybe 15 years ago, and no tickets.

They won't lower the rates, and even when I showed them quotes from other insurance companies that are much lower..

For same coverage:

Geicko - 158

Allstate - 168

Farmers - 200

Progressive - 110

American Family won't budge... So I think its time to switch..

Anyway, I made this topic to see what other people around here use, and what are your thoughts on Geicko, Allstate, Farmers or Progressive? Or any other company out there.

Sorry I ain't in the US but I am an insurance agent in Mexico.
Which, if actually done well can become a profession by itself.

I will mention general ideas, as of course the legistation is different between our countries however there are some factors are still share a common sense.

Per experiencie talking with my clients, it's extremely rare is it actually "the same coverage for less price". There are many small print factors that are make it different.

Now if it's anything similar Mexico to the US, there are many agents that just sell you the insurance but won't actually tell you the fine fine print. At the end, the client decides and will get mad or get happy UNTIL there's an accident.
As a reference, our fine print is a pdf of 60 pages long.

Let's talk Tech. Take the i5 14th gen. There are 8 varients. Only PC enthusits know the difference, the rest of the world don't have the least idea and would go with i3 because it's cheaper.. Insurance ain't no different.

Reason being the agents here don't explain to each detail is becasue the comission is so small, not worth it.

So food for thought. In the end I wasn't able to help you, but do consider there's more than meets the eye

hmm, I think I will have to visit state farm...

There online quote request is not very helpful, after filling out all the info it just says "send to agent", been 48 hours and no one from state farm called so far..

Look online for a local State Farm Agent and call them directly.  I've had the same agent for the last 17 years and she has been great.

Did you say your car insurance is 250 a month? Christ my car insurance (Ireland) is 390 a year and I think it's too high, it also went up for no good reason this year. Insurance companies are ######

They are not, however your answer is very common.

Without going into much detail, USA costs are VERY different (for example labor) also the state/nation population of Ireland is 1/60 of the US. Amoung over dozen reasons.

Like I said, there is more than meets the eye. It's normal when you don't know the topic at hand.
Go to a cooking forum and talk how freelance developers fees are reasonable, people won't get it.

Don't be loyal to your insurance company (or any company). If you find a cheaper rate for the same coverage, go with that company

I was paying a little over $1600/year for 2 vehicles/2 drivers. I bought a house and bundled homeowners/auto insurance. I now pay $900/year for both with better coverage.

eSurance (part of Allstate) was pretty good for me, and they handled claims well.  That being, we just switched to a shared plan with my girlfriend and added home insurance and moved to AAA.  Overall, we're paying $300 less, but we had to join AAA, which has it's own benefits.

We had Farmers for years but I can't really comment on auto rates because the car was bundled in with my home owners policy. We landed up cancelling them after the home owner policy renewal was too expensive (58% increase).

I use Farm Bureau Insurance of Florida, (Don't confuse them with Farmer's Insurance, or with State Farm, not the same companies) and they are wonderful with the best rates I have seen for car insurance here.  Check if they exist in your state. I know they are in many states, but they have a separate website for each state, etc.

Now, they do check your credit before they accept you as a member; last time I checked.

Why not go through an Insurance Broker, that's what we do for 3 drivers and 2 vehicles + homeowners, they will find you the cheapest rate, we're currently with CAA (AAA in the states).

more info here

I  heard of Farm Bureau Insurance but didn't know they checked credit so thoroughly, so I've also recently looked at other companies that don't check credit so thoroughly 😁

No one has any experience with Geico, Allstate, Farmers or Progressive?

I just recently switched over to Progressive because after purchasing a 2020 Hyundai Elantra SE (Standard Edition - no bells and whistles), they were going to charge me $1500 a year! Along with $1,000 a year for our 2023 Honda Odyssey.  They also doubled my homeowners insurance premium for who knows what reason. I have had no claims in a decade or crashes.  I called Progressive and got a quote of $1,400 a year for both vehicles, and my homeowners insurance is $400 a year cheaper too.

Progressive seems to me to be pretty good.  Acuity Insurance, not so much

    • This got me thinking, would you rather a self driving car prioritise protecting its passengers or everyone else? I'd choose the one that keeps me and my kids safest. At some point, these cars have to make those choices already, don't they? Wonder if we have a way to find out what way they lean.
    • The proportion (or number of iterations) has nothing to with this aspect of Copyright I am describing. In short, it doesn't matter how many times the manager tells you to change something or how. Your work product is always YOURS until and unless you then assign that to the person representing the client/company, usually for financial compensation -- either in salary or as a subcontract work for hire payment. if iterations determined copyright, then businesses would have learned to just keep making changes until they could claim they owned the copyright, without having to compensate the artist for their work. And that would be BAD. The only place where the amount of changes does have a role is in how much does a human modify a previous public domain work (from any source) before it is considered fair use or their own work, etc. For example, if a human makes substantial changes to a public domain (re: AI, by definition) work, then they can then claim that derivative work as their own...but NEVER the original version, of course. That's why anyone can make a movie about Dracula, for example, as long as it is based on the public domain novel, but not if they take new ideas from copyrighted movies made afterwards. As one of the people who personally advised the US Copyright Office on their recent ruling on these very issues, be assured that I specifically used the terminology precisely -- though I made it simple enough for laymen to understand it. If I made this confusing by doing so, I apologize. But, to be clear regarding your assumption that I would agree to your second statement that I quoted above -- the answer is NO. If AI does the work, no matter how much "direction" you give it, it cannot be copyrighted. All AI generated content is in the Public Domain and therefore the copyright cannot be assigned to ANYONE, even you -- until and unless substantial modifications are made to it BY A HUMAN BEING (yourself or a contracted artist/writer/etc.) and then that copyright on the derivative work is legally (in writing) transferred to you. This is a critical distinction. And it is important that people, especially AI sloppers, understand this. For example, YouTube is not paying AI slop generators for the copyright, etc. of their AI slop. What YouTube is doing is sharing AD REVENUE for permission to publish your AI slop. Copyright/ownership/rights never come into it. Importantly, that means that anyone can copy any AI slopware on YouTube, etc. and rehost it anywhere they want, even back on YouTube, and there is nothing legal that YouTube can do about it with regards to copyright protections, ownership, DMCA, etc. Anyone is legally free to use any AI slopware in any way they want. When this ruling was pending, I warned Disney legal of all of this before they did their OpenAI deal -- that it would literally dilute their entire IP portfolio forever. They ignored that warning for the PR and stock bump. But that is why, when the ruling came down last year, Disney quickly extricated themselves from that OpenAI deal, even eating the initial upfront fees -- followed closely by OpenAI ending their entire AI video generating business model. They adjusted their PR release dates to make this less obvious to shareholders, of course. Phew. I hope that this clears up the key distinctions for you and anyone reading. If you have any additional questions or even hypotheticals about AI and Copyright, please feel free to ask.
