UnitedHealthcare CEO shot dead outside Manhattan Hilton hotel in ‘targeted attack’

A manhunt is underway after UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was shot dead on Wednesday morning in what cops described as a “brazen targeted attack” outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan.

Thompson’s wife said her husband had recently received threats from angry customers over complaints she believed may have had to do with “a lack of coverage.”

“I don’t know details,” Paulette Thompson told NBC News. “I just know that he said there were some people that had been threatening him.”

I saw Brian Thompson and thought of the actor. Big relief when I saw it was just this scumbag.

It's hard to feel sad for a man who just died who was probably directly responsible for the deaths of possibly thousands of people. It'll be really difficult to find the shooter when there are probably tens of thousands of people with motive. Shooter was calm, had a silencer, backpack likely filled with new clothes and a bike for transport was very smart. Patient too. They're probably aware of where all the cameras are considering the forethought they put into it. If they find out who did it I'd be very surprised.

I don't condone what happened, but when you're part of a company responsible for so much pain...people are going to have something against you.

I'm just surprised by how crappy some security camera still looks. The ones I have are from 2013 and they look HD.

What does 90% error rate to provide care mean exactly?

I'm guessing a possible motive.

Also easier to blame it on the AI, then employee's being told to not approve as much as possible and have greater liability.

**cough** if you had a look at some camsites you'd notice that US cameras are much lower quality than european or asian ones 😛 not that i look at any of those....

anywho ...from wiki

"Shortly following the death, rival insurance company Blue Cross Blue Shield cancelled a plan to stop covering the cost of anesthesia for longer surgeries"

while that is a good thing it sets a bad precedent that if you don't like something and what it changed then shoot the leader. Actually considering the who the new leader of america is maybe that isn't a bad thing either 🤔

Perhaps one of the times where "then" and "than" are crucial to your comment...

You have 0 idea what you're talking about.

For a moment I thought I was  on reddit.

Unless you actually care I could explain how an Insurance company actually works. How the make money, how they pay claims and so forth. Plot twist they work the same in all the world regardless of the category.

Consider I'm a former IT guy with some certifications so it isn't like I can't think like a tech nor I was 'born' working in a white collar company, which I ain't becasue I'm just an independant agent  (i.e. I'm not an employee)

Finding out where his kids are so I could do that would be more than a little creepy.

Rejoicing on the other hand is fun.

You can't just go around assasinating people... USA, USA, USA: What a world. Don't you guys have some governing body to take care of all such things? Not assasinations, but what Brian Thomson ought to have done to many people.

    • The very fact that a TPM (v2.0 specifically which is part of the issue I suspect) is now a baseline for any supported Windows installation will naturally mean other vendors will start to leverage it as they know it'll be there. It's called progress, and it's always been the way. A TPM isn't a windows thing, it's just a module designed to securely store keys. Secure boot isn't a Windows thing (although MS are the TCA as I recall hence the upheaval this year as the 2011 certs expire), it's just a way to verify a bootloader is signed. Windows simply leverages them.
    • It's a local account with the ability to reset a password at a very base level. I really don't get the issue that gets whipped up around it But you do you
