Tesla raises prices, now ineligible for $5,000 rebate (lowering to $4K in the summer)

The prices of the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y have increased by $1,000, meaning a vast majority of Canadians will no longer be able to buy them with the help of the $5,000 federal government rebate.

To get the rebate, electric cars need to start at under $55,000 and SUVs under $60,000. The Tesla Model 3 now costs $55,990, and the Model Y SUV is $60,990. A few years ago, Tesla used to offer a cheaper Model 3 that you couldn’t order online to keep under the EV rebate limit, but it either doesn’t care anymore or knows something we don’t about the end of the federal EV credit.

The federal government EV subsidy is likely to end this March as it runs out of funding, while it would have been nice to see Tesla keep its lower price until then, it likely won’t make much of a difference to the automaker’s bottom line.

Quebec has also announced that it’s suspending its rebate for three months this spring, and when it comes back, the rebate will be lower, putting it in line with the $4,000 rebate you also get in B.C.

Yet, the hike means it no longer qualifies for government rebate, which will go down to $4,000 CAD when it returns after a three month suspension in spring 2025.
