It's Happened. Chrome Killed UBlock Origin

Recommended Posts

Google have killed UBlock Origin on their browser...for me at least.

We knew it was coming but it's a shock.

Already changed default browser to Firefox and downloading Brave as my secondary browser.

you can switch to a system wide adblocker like AdGuard and still use Chrome.

If your feeling adventurous, you can use a raspberry pi (3b works great) and make a pi-hole server for your home network for free.
https://pi-hole.net/

Note - It does not block youtube ads.

Or just not use a browser that is not hostile to users and doesn't respect their privacy.

Another box just to block ads seems like over kill when can just use uBlock Origin in Firefox (that also blocks Youtube ads).

I'm still using uBlock Origin on the latest current version of Chrome...  133.0.6943.127 on Windows 11 Home.

It's still blocking ads for me.

Does this mean that you cannot download the extension anymore?  But because I already had it installed it keeps working?

🤔

Firefox is my preferred browser personally . A benefit (depending on your block lists) is non-pc’s devices, including PlayStation/Xbox (telemetry), mobile devices (apps that run on them) gain a base level of ad blocking while on your network.

Was it the regular version or the lite version?

It was the regular version. Google also killed AutoPlayStopper which is a shame. I'd been using that for years.

Yes, that's an option. I'm aware of AdGuard but have never really taken a close look.

Not sure I'm that adventurous to be honest.

YT ads aren't an issue as we're YT Premium subscribers and have been since it was called YT Red. We watch a lot of YT and use YT Music as our music streaming service so it's a no brainer for us.

Still working on a Win 10 box with uBlock origin 1.62 and Chrome 133.0.6943.127

When you say "killed", does it just not start or ?

When I opened Chrome a pop up informed me that UBlock Origin and AutoPlayStopper had been turned off and Google recommended I uninstall them.

I had it installed. Refer to my response to @Riggers

I'm now using FF on mobile with ad blocker and have set it to default. Hopefully, Mozilla sync is as excellent as Google Chrome sync. I was using Brave a lot on mobile but will give FF a go now given the sync with desktop hopes.

I got the message on multiple PC's at work and simply turned it back on. It is still blocking ads but there is a small note in the ublock setting that says "The extension may soon no longer be supported". I see the same behavior on multiple Win 11 PC's

Well, I spoke to soon 😒  ###### Google just switched off uBlock origin and no way to turn it back on. It`s just a test box for some stuff (main box is Fx) so I`ve placed the lite version on...we`ll see how it goes!

Ugh, ba**ards!

I wonder how they're rolling this out. I'm also surprised that there is no tech site coverage of this.

Yes, that's the message I've had on my two W10 laptops for a couple of months.

The other day though, Google flicked the switch.

The screenshot is from yesterday and clearly shows it's on and working.

Are you saying you cannot turn yours back on?

It's not really about "killing" anything specific. It is about Manifest v3 (https://developer.chrome.com/docs/extensions/develop/migrate/what-is-mv3) being enforced for all extensions now. This has been coming for over two years, and uBlock Origin Lite is based on MV3: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/ublock-origin-lite/ddkjiahejlhfcafbddmgiahcphecmpfh. Google even postponed this about years ago when it was first supposed to become a requirement. For some ad blocking insight you can read AdGuard's comments about it: https://adguard.com/en/blog/chrome-manifest-v3-where-we-stand.html.

I dropped Chrome when it started glitching with my preset tabs. Never managed to fix it, no matter how much troubleshooting I did. Only option was to nuke and reinstall. I gave it a lot of chances but in the end I never got it to work right. Firefox never had that problem, so I switched back to it (was my default in my college years). Haven't looked back since.

Manifest v3 is not just a Chromium thing, and it applies to all browsers. However Mozilla has decided to retain Manifest v2 support, at least for now. This will probably change at some point since most extension devs probably aren't interested in maintaining separate extensions for Chromium and Firefox. I'm also a Firefox user, so I am not arguing against it at all, just pointing out that soon we may not have anything but MV3 based extensions available.

You know what, I don't know.

The pop up told me UBlock Origin no longer works and I should remove it so given I knew this was coming I didn't even explore that option. I removed it.

Either way, this was happening at some point but your point is valid. I could have checked and maybe extended the staus quo for a few months.

Yes, we are aware. This site has covered this extensively.

Ok, fair enough. For me, Google Chrome has been the superior browser when it comes to sync between my browser, GMail, YouTube which I live on and my Google Pixel phone.

I begrudgenly am now using FF again. It has been several years but after taking the time to set up FF it is more than capable. I'm keeping Chrome for YouTube, YouTube Music and GMail but my daily driver is now Firefox.

Not sure it will change unless FF gains majorly in desktop market share.

The reason Google pays Mozilla half a billion dollars a year is to show global regulators that Chrome isn't a monopoly.

With BleachBit you can free cache, delete cookies, clear Internet history, shred temporary files, delete logs, and discard junk you didn't know was there. Designed for Linux and Windows systems, it wipes clean thousands of applications including Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Opera, Safari, and more. Better than free, BleachBit is open source. BleachBit has many useful features: Delete your private files so completely that "even God can't read them" according to South Carolina Representative Trey Gowdy. Simple operation: read the descriptions, check the boxes you want, click preview, and click delete. Multi-platform: Linux and Windows Free of charge and no money trail Free to share, learn, and modify (open source) No adware, spyware, malware, browser toolbars, or "value-added software" Translated to 64 languages besides American English Shred files to hide their contents and prevent data recovery Shred any file (such as a spreadsheet on your desktop) Overwrite free disk space to hide previously deleted files Portable app for Windows: run without installation Command line interface for scripting and automation CleanerML allows anyone to write a new cleaner using XML Automatically import and update winapp2.ini cleaner files (a separate download) giving Windows users access to 2500+ additional cleaners Frequent software updates with new features Going beyond standard deletion of files, BleachBit has several advanced cleaners: Clear the memory and swap on Linux Delete broken shortcuts on Linux Delete the Firefox URL history without deleting the whole file—with optional shredding Delete Linux localizations: delete languages you don't use. This maintenance-focused release includes bug fixes, updated translations, and a range of safe enhancements. This release fixes a Windows security issue that could allow arbitrary file deletion during privileged cleaning (reported by Zeze with TeamT5). It also adds new cleaners (including a DNS cache cleaner, Claude Code, and Visual Studio Code forks), support for multiple Chrome and Edge profiles, new deep scan options for developer directories like node_modules and venv, and safer, faster file shredding. All Platforms Added cleaners for Claude Code, DNS cache, and many Visual Studio Code forks. Added support for multiple Chrome and Edge profiles. Chrome can now clean downloaded AI models. Deep Scan can optionally remove venv, __pycache__, node_modules, and .angular directories. Deep Scan is faster by skipping directories on the keep list. File shredding is safer, faster, and leaves fewer recoverable traces. Improved handling of cookies, symlinks, Unicode filenames, external processes, and configuration files. Improved Expert Mode warnings and long warning dialogs. Fixed crashes related to cleaner detection, invalid Unicode, and malformed cleaner data. Clipboard is now cleared automatically after shredding files via paste operations. Linux Added AppImage support. Added cleaners for Visual Studio Code, Codeium, Librewolf (.deb), Transmission (Flatpak), and Profanity. Improved Linux trash detection, including Snap-installed applications and mounted drives. Fixed Wayland root CLI issues and several Snap-related problems. Improved package dependencies, AppStream metadata, and desktop file handling. Fixed startup crashes when Python Requests is unavailable. Windows Fixed a security vulnerability that could allow arbitrary file deletion when cleaning with elevated privileges. Added %WindowsSystem% variable support. Improved clipboard clearing using native Windows APIs. Improved installer experience on unsupported Windows versions. Reduced installer size and improved application robustness. Fixed Unicode handling, filename anonymization, Git revision reporting, and splash screen stability. • DriversCloud 12.1.6 by Razvan Serea With DriversCloud (formerly My-Config.com), you can explore your computer easily, safely and free. The application quickly scans your PC and identifies the hardware and software components. DriversCloud then establishes a list of the different drivers compatible with your OS and hardware. Download the drivers needed for the proper functioning of your computer. To detect your drivers, DriversCloud also displays a detailed summary of your hardware and software configuration, analyzes your BSOD, monitors in real-time your PC voltages and temperatures and lets you share your configuration online. Once the hardware components have been detected, you will be able to obtain with just a few clicks the latest drivers corresponding to the identified hardware. You can record your configuration on the site for free, and can get the corresponding URL to post the configuration to technical forums, e-mail and social networks. You can also download the detection result (the configuration) as a PDF file. To protect the user's privacy and data confidentiality, a 4-level confidentiality system was created that filters the XML marks and gives control to the user. The default level can be modified in the preferences. Using the maximum level will prevent the user from publishing his configuration and generating a corresponding PDF file. In non-connected mode, each XML configuration is stored on the server for one day (for practical reasons). However, you are given the opportunity to manually delete it. Created in 2004, and continually improved, My-Config.com has established itself on the web as a free service to PC users running Windows and Linux operating systems. The service is designed to work with the most common Internet browsers (Edge, Firefox, Chrome, Safari).
