Pop-up asking me to disable my ad blocker

Yeah but the ad block popup thing is not a Neowin cookie. Neowin sets a lot of cookies from different domains too I believe. Just look! 😛 (you can view this by pressing F12 > and then the 'Application' tab in Chrome).

If you are deleting cookies after every session then it makes sense to me that you have to login to YouTube and certain other sites again, and so forth.

Even though the cookies are not called neowin.net they are still considered first party ones necessary to the site for different things. Third party cookies are blocked by default in Chrome (also on my Chrome) but everything "just works".

The same rule applies to YouTube, as well as other sites that are whitelisted by Cookie AutoDelete, and I have no issues connecting to these sites?

Everything is kept with Cookie AutoDelete, except third-party cookies.

If you disabled Cookie AutoDelete completely for a test, does it still happen?

At the end of the day I want to solve this with you :)

I think you've hit the nail on the head!

I logged out after disabling Cookie AutoDelete, relaunched Firefox, and returned to the site, and no pop-ups. Before claiming victory, I'm going to leave this extension deactivated, and I'll let you know the results in a few days' time. If it's this extension that's the problem, I'll uninstall it, as well as report the problem I've encountered.

Thank You!

It didn't take that long, with the extension disabled (Cookie AutoDelete), without even leaving the browser, back on Neowin, and I'm greeted by this pop-up! So it's worse than with the extension enabled! Because before, at least during the same session, I could come back without having to close this pop-up! I'm going to do with it as if nothing was happening, and simply close the window. 🤷🏽‍♂️

I'm just thinking out loud for a second...could it be the cookie prompt that kicks up the adblock message?

The reason I ask is that on Firefox (ad-block enabled but not for Neowin) I don't get the cookie consent option. But if I open Chrome (ad-block disabled) and go to the Neowin I get the cookie banner and then it's all fine.

Some form of conflict of interest between the banners?

It's probably nothing, but that's what I have just noticed.

Yeah the cookie consent is required for even displaying ads.

Whether on Edge or Firefox, I don't get this prompt to accept cookies, because they're already whitelisted by the Cookie AutoDelete extension, both on Edge and Firefox.

And, as I've already said, using Edge (yesterday), Neowin isn't whitelisted (I never use Edge), and I didn't get that pop-up. And this morning, after checking, still no pop-up, and everything is activated, the proof (screenshot), I have no ads on the right side.

I must add that I block the following trackers Doubleclick, and Scorecardresearch, as well as a few other undesirable ones, via the Host file.

Back to square one!

After all, it's a simple click to continue, so I'll do with it. 🤷🏽‍♂️

Thank You

If you never consented to cookies (required), and you're blocking ad domains and you never see ads on Neowin (despite whitelisting) wouldn't you agree the adblock popup notice is doing what it is supposed to do?

Honestly, I don't remember accepting or refusing cookies following a prompt, because I've accepted or refused cookies on several other sites.

On the other hand, I remember seeing  ads, before the start of the available articles (on the home page), and on the right. If the trackers I've mentioned are part of the cookies I have to accept (as well as those below), trackers that are detected by my antivirus as adware during the weekly scan, they'll remain where they are. The vast majority of cookies blocked by the Host file were added by Unchecky.

I'd say so, but are Doubleclick, Scorecardresearch, Opencandy, file2desktop, etc. among those that should be accepted? If not, then I'd say no.

Not to sound ungrateful for your continued presence on Neowin (which I prefer) 😛  But would you consider a subscription to just have all the third party ads turned off by us?

It's $28 ($2.33 per month) for the ad-free subscription, but it is also there for assistance and support with all the running costs.

Like everything, it is becoming increasingly harder to do this, we even try to offset it with Amazon affiliate commissions (if we could finance totally through that instead of ads, I would) 😛

I just checked with Brave portable, the shield is disabled, as well as uBlock Origin Lite, no change to the Host file, and no pop-up when I connect to the site 😵!

I think this might be the best option?

I don't have a Paypal account, because I got rid of it, and I was fed up with all the phishing attempts, so I use my credit card. Do you take credit card payments? Because so far it's been safer, no phishing attempts.

I think you can use a credit card to donate

Here is the link https://www.neowin.net/donate/ (donate button) or by bank? (same page)

By coincidence our server guy @DaveLeggis at our server facility in the UK today replacing a router ($450+ cost) here's a pic of our rack:

I don't have the option of making a donation with a credit card, the other two are there. If I click on Donate, I'm redirected to Paypal!

Never delete cookies here.

Edit: As of a couple restarts of Firefox with and without VPN, I did not get the pop up, but did both times, with and without VPN in Edge.

Thought I'd quote myself as reference to what was happening yesterday. I wasn't getting the pop up then in Firefox, but I did just now using it.

I don't know man.. when I go incognito and I fill in an amount and click on Donate with Debit or credit card, it takes me to a page where I can choose the country and bank/credit card details to fill in. It does not require a PayPal account.

No biggie either way.

    • What? They aren't removing the disc drive and charging $800 for questionable performance upgrades that are better suited to a new generation console? How outrageous!
    • Bummer it's only 1TB instead of 2. I had one of those - the "Halo Special Edition" OG Xbox. This looks like a cool update.

    • Google's NotebookLM gets some useful features you may have been waiting for by Aditya Tiwari It's been three years since Google introduced its AI-powered note-taking and research app, NotebookLM. Just when Apple is about to kick off WWDC 2026, the search giant has announced a platter of new NotebookLM features that add agentic capabilities in chat and more advanced reasoning. For starters, NotebookLM now draws its fuel from Gemini 3.5 and Antigravity to improve accuracy and reliability. One of the things people have been asking for a long time is more transparency into the thinking steps. NotebookLM now shows expanded thinking steps in chat, providing better visibility into the thinking process. Google compared the upgraded NotebookLM with prior versions and found that it "achieved an average win rate of over 65% — a 15% point margin above parity — across our top five core evaluation dimensions," including accuracy & quality, multilingual support, large document analysis, document creation, and advanced research. It showed substantial improvements in analyzing large documents, achieving a 69.9% win rate. The system also delivered "exceptional performance" in advanced web research and source discovery with a 78.2% win rate. The AI research tool now generates outputs in more formats. You can give instructions to guide the outputs and download the generated files from the studio panel. Here are the newly supported formats: PNG and SVG for data visualizations and charts PDFs, docx, markdown, and text files for documents PNG, JPG, and GIF for images JSON and CSV for structured data XLSX for Microsoft Excel PPTX for Microsoft PowerPoint You can make edits after the outputs are generated. The feature is available globally; therefore, you can provide directions in one language and create outputs in another. Google said that it's also making it easier to get started with a project in NotebookLM. Instead of having a list of sources beforehand, you can even start with loose ideas, and NotebookLM can help build the repository of sources through the chat. For instance, you can find primary sources in other languages to get new perspectives or explore related works of an author. All of these new features are rolling out globally for those who can loosen up their pockets. They are available to users with Google AI Ultra and all Workspace business customers with AI Ultra access. Google has plans to expand them to more users in the future.
