Load comments and notifications

Idk if this changed for everyone or some new setting I can adjust but the comments section in posts on front page always makes me load them manually now and so a link like this https://www.neowin.net/news/netflix-kills-a-useful-mobile-app-feature-sparking-criticism-among-users/#comments or this https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1461606-elon-musk-explains-how-ai-and-robotics-can-solve-the-massive-us-debt-crisis-for-real/?do=findComment&comment=599029891 doesn't work because i have to load the comments first now and it's annoying af and broke notifications afaik.

As noted above, this has been mentioned by other members.

Comments on articles are now hidden from guests so you need to be logged in. Maybe it's because of my role on the website, but when I receive a notification from something in an article I'm still able to click and scroll to the place that the comment was made. If that isn't the case for you then I would consider that a bug, but let us know.

Nick, I would be interested to see how many visitors Neowin lose because of this nonsense. I get it, it's the advertisers who are pushing this, I'm not blaming Neowin.

In my experience, if I visit a site as a non member and that site blocks viewing comments then I leave and don't return for months. I know for a fact I'm not alone in that action.

FWIW, this short term requirement from the ad industry will harm Neowin in the long term.

let's see if this posts this time - the thread that was mentioned says we must pay to remove ads to get it to load automatically. you broke your own website now because of this.

Having to click Show Comments on every article is annoying. Change it back and tell the advertisers to go jump in a lake if they don't like it.

I'm in no position to do any of the above. It's not my site, it's just my home on the Internet. ;)

We can't tell the advertisers to go and do one. I've come to learn through my own recent experiences that maintenance fees, bills etc. add up quite quickly, so being able to offset those costs is always a priority.

A workaround would be for every member to pay for a subscription. Then we could tell the advertisers where to go. But that would make the site hidden behind a paywall, and I don't think any of us want that.

Does anyone have any ideas other than what I've just suggested about what to do? How could we get rid of the advertisers' control?

Nice try, and well done on twisting my words. /s

Here's what really happened: A Tier2 subscriber reminded me that they already pay to never see any ads on Neowin (as well as some other benefits) and requested (not demanded, or made false accusations against me) if it was possible for them to be excluded from the automatic comments hiding. I agreed that it made perfect sense, because that group of subscribers never have display ads shown next to the content, and it was a quick fix for our part-time developer.

Bonus info: Links to comments is broken for them too, and all staff so it's not just you.

So in short, you do not have to pay, but if you do pay for a Tier2 subscription it is a benefit we can offer and where we are not in violation of any advertising agreements.
