Elon Musk and Apple CEO Tim Cook to join Donald Trump on trip to China

china and America flags side by side

US President Donald Trump will visit China this week, and the White House has confirmed that a large group of US businessmen and executives will accompany him. Tesla’s Elon Musk and Apple CEO Tim Cook are among the leaders joining the trip.

Both Apple and Tesla have a strong presence in the Chinese market, although they have recently faced increasing competition from local companies. During the visit, the United States and China are expected to sign a series of trade agreements across various industries. Boeing could also be a major beneficiary, as the company aims to finalize a deal for 500 737 Max units.

Other tech executives joining Trump include Meta’s Dina Powell McCormick, Qualcomm’s Cristiano Amon, and Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins. Additional participants include David Solomon of Goldman Sachs, Stephen Schwarzman of Blackstone, Larry Fink of BlackRock, and Sanjay Mehrotra of Micron.

Interestingly, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang was not invited to join the China trip, despite the company’s efforts to sell its H200 AI chip to Chinese customers. Sources familiar with the matter say the trip is primarily focused on agriculture and commercial aviation deals.

After months of back-and-forth, NVIDIA received US government permission to sell its H200 AI chip to China. However, the deal has not yet been finalized, as NVIDIA’s Chinese customers still need approval from the Chinese government. Previously, China had accused NVIDIA of violating anti-monopoly laws and embedding kill switches in AI chips. Some reports even suggest that the US may have asked NVIDIA to include these kill switches in the chips exported to China.

Donald Trump’s second term as US president began with a trade war against China, during which the US imposed massive tariffs on imported goods and products from China. The two global powers later agreed to slash tariffs and begin trade negotiations.
