If I need to choose free forum software, I would install MyBB. It has lots of cool features and some people even say it might be better than vBulleting (although I never used the administration panel of that one). The MyBB developers are currently planning to release version 1.4 in July 2008.

Btw I am creating forum software too. It will be called StormBB and is open source. I think the first version will be downloadable in August. You can already get more information from SourceForge.
