Scylla's Sinking Feeling

Recommended Posts

Europe is getting its first artificial diving reef with the sinking of a retired warship off the coast of Cornwall.

Thousands watched the vessel scuttled a few miles from where it was built 36 years ago.

HMS Scylla was towed to her last resting place before three sets of explosives sent it to the bottom of the sea within three minutes just after 3.30pm.

On-board web cameras were due to beam the sinking live to screens at the Plymouth-based National Marine Aquarium (NMA).

In the weeks following the sinking, the NMA plans to send a team of divers down to the hull to send back pictures to a giant screen in the aquarium.

An aquarium spokesman said: "It is a serious marine research event which gives us a window on the ocean."

Among those watching the sinking from a nearby boat were the Scylla's last Commanding officer, Captain Mike Booth, who said he was "delighted she will be put to such good use".
