strife379
I am just wondering if the Critical Update is safe to get for us not so legal owners of XP. Does it have any kind of tracking in it or is it just what it says, a simple Critical Update? Just wondering cause I don't want to get in trouble with MS even though I going to purchase it in October...
Lynchmob
try a firewall then update see if ms is trying to access your computer you see that would be a trojan from ms anywho ive updated the Critical Update and have a firewall seems fine
configure Veteran Posted September 16, 2001 Veteran Share Posted September 16, 2001 According to them, they don't send the information back to MS, but well.. who knows? Beside, I don't think they'll be tracking you down and send FBI on your front door bust you up, they might just send some sort of program that when activate will halt your XP as soon as you enter a new valid CD-Key.. :p
(MC)RaGe
I myself aren't too sure of Critical Update myself.. One of those critical updates might just be the one that disables my copy of XP.. Leaving me high and dry.
configure Veteran Posted September 17, 2001 Veteran Share Posted September 17, 2001 If they really did that, ALOT of people will be locked out :p, and the word will be spread, and we should hear it.. :)

configure Veteran Posted September 19, 2001 Veteran Share Posted September 19, 2001 Or maybe there're no critical update, I mean.. they didn't even officially release the thing yet, I mean it didn't even hit the store yet..
PabUK Veteran Posted September 19, 2001 Veteran Share Posted September 19, 2001 If there is indeed a critical update (as several people have said) then I think Tikimotel is right. By default Windows is set to automatically check for and download updates. However it is supposed to tell you when it is about to install one so maybe this isn't possible. Go to Control Panel > System > Automatic Updates to change these settings.
