Windows Server 2003 as a Workstation Guide

This is a 4 page review written by me (Steven Parker) on how to configure Windows Server 2003 as a Workstation Guide.

Read it here, comments welcome, however trolling on how a Server OS isn't a Workstation is not needed. The title would suggest that the author is aware this is a Server Operating System.

well actually , win 2003 is way faster than xp & if we can get it successfully running as a workstation & also get our majority of applications & GAMES running on it , i guess there is no need to turn back to windows xp .

At what stage is the Java file installed?

Everything else is mentioned in the guide, except Java.

Firstly thanks for the wonderful guide :)

I want to ask what antivirus are you guys using for win 2003?

I use F-secure 2004 and it slows the startup by a lot.

it works and its great as a workstation but i cant find any cheap virusscanners or free ones like avg

I wonder how many people are using this as a replacement for XP. I mean some people may have access to the full range of OS's through their jobs/msdn subs or whatever (yes warez too, but its all the same) and it might be interesting to get a poll going. I bet lots of people have 'tried it' and junked it for whatever reason but i wonder how many people have kept it? :)

Good guide btw, also check out MSFN as their have a continualy updated guide. Maybe people could post here other stuff they find out so that it can be added to neowin's guide?

I hear ya, but the guide is intended to be a quick transformation, when we add all sorts of 3rd party additions to the article it can remove itself from being current very quickly. Thats also why I chose to do a very generic slipstream guide instead of the more popular 'lets install Mozilla v0.8 while we're at it too' ideas that seem to be making the rounds :p

I've always been curious, is there a performance benefit to using win2k3 as opposed to xp?? I can't afford to try it, I'd just really like to know why people do it, other than the fact that they can?

Beautiful. Theres an application available (can't remember the name exactly) that will tweak 2k3 -> Workstation. It employs _all_ of the changes that have been recommended by the guide, and only takes up 300 kb.

Win2k works a lot faster and more stable than WinXP IMHO/... even as a workstation. There was a tweaklike program but somethings on it werent complete or not workin correctly if i remember? :p
