incase you all didn't know this, in LH 4074, to get aero, open the run dialog and type:

"c:\windows\i386\sbctl.exe" start

and then to stop it type

"c:\windows\i386\sbctl.exe" stop

aero isn't compatible with most video cards so it may just display windows with black around them cause it can't render the image right.

DWM != Aero.

That will give you transparent FAT window borders, a few widow effects, an all around slow desktop, and shome shadows.

i like it, and its useable if you have a good enough pc. also, to imnuts, cpukiller was the one that figured out(i think) how to run sbctl.exe in the first place. he means the actuall tramparent border is bigger than normal, which it is.

the reason your getting the fat window borders is because your grapics card isn't compatible with the effects. if your graphics card was up to par with the effects then you get a 3D effect on you windows without modifying any dll's.

no, the reason that he's getting fat window borders is thats because thats how the jade dwm skin is designed. they are much larger than the standard 5 pixel window borders.

and as someone else said: DWM != Aero

Its a known fact that when you enable DWM, you get fatter - larger, window borders. Screenshot attached.

Yes, my PC is up to spec to run DWM and it does it just fine - I know just how it looks, and I've used pretty much all its features.

No matter how good your pc is , it will be slow, slower than it should be - its not hardware accelerated, for that you need the Longhorn Driver Model, and the Aero Drivers, which were presented at the Jim Allchin Aero Keynote, for further Aero effects which can be activated thru DWM.

nVidia said they were developing special Aero drivers and will unveil them later in LH's developement - suspect aTI is doing the same.

Jim Allchins PC (WinHEC Aero Keynote) was using a Radeon.

And no, I wasn't the first to publicly expose how DWM could be enabled, altho I can assure I had it enabled before 99% of people here :p.

i don't know if we're talking about the same thing anymore, when i think of aero, i think of windows that are in a 3D layout, not like the windows in your pic. when i try to enable it, it get the same thing you do, except where yours is clear, mine is black, and that is what a lot of people will get. i'll search around for a picture of what i'm thinking of and what whould happen when you start aero.

    • Wow, lol.. afaik the feed burner one hasn't been supported for some time, so I am surprised it still works!
    • I usually future-proof the parts that are expensive to replace later. If I'm running new cables, I always choose Cat6 or Cat6a instead of the cheapest option. For switches, I buy one with a few extra ports so I have room to expand. I don't always chase the latest networking standard unless I actually need it. I've found that a reliable router and good Wi-Fi coverage make a bigger difference than raw speed for most home networks. Planning ahead has saved me from doing a complete network rebuild later.
    • Back when I used to watch cable television, I used the mute button continuously... I picked up the habit from my father who was doing that with his decent Zenith TVs back when they made decent products, say 60+ years ago. When cable debuted as "pay television" the scuttlebutt was that television was going ad-free. Hardy-har-har... We dropped Netflix years ago as the services and programming deteriorated. Services that force-feed me ads I don't care to see I tend to shun, but with computers and programmable Internet television at least the ads can either be blocked or else rejected 90% of the time. But some of the ads Google runs are either so bad or so fraudulent that it's hard to believe they are running.
    • That name is kind of disingenuous, they should have called it RTX 5085 or 5090 Lite.
