Installing OS X (10.2) on a PC

apple will be out of business so fast if they released the mac os for x86. their OS is basically what's selling their hardware for so much money, so if they made their OS compatable with x86, their hardware would be useless, not making them any money, therefore losing a load of business.

i agree, i hope they are never stupid enough to realease an X86 version now...i used to think the same way...

Apple are moving steadily toward the software side of the business, thanks to the huge success of iTunes. I would think OS X on x86 is likely, now. Apple's hardware sales are not as big as they should be by now; home Linux still has a fractionally greater market share. If nothing else, it makes sense for Apple to leave this emulator well alone, for the time being; when people load up os x on their windows/linux boxes, they will see how gorgeous OS X looks and experience the frustration of lack of speed and functionality. At the moment, this emulator is just one more thing that sends people to Mac stores. If perfect speed and functionality could be achieved, apple are going to make a lot of money from selling OS X to Joe Windows; though I am far from a Windows XP hater, OS X is everything that Windows XP should be but isn't.

Hmm, interesting. I was over at emaculation.com and have read several posts from people with Athlon64 processors and a good whack of memory, who have found os x runs fairly smoothly. If things continue to mature, perhaps OS X on x86 is both viable and desireable. Some will argue that the way to go, instead of buying a new x86 computer/componants, is to buy a Mac and install Virtual PC on it on which to run Windows XP. I have seen Windows XP running on a G5 and it was no slouch, but on lesser spec Macs it was torture on anything but office applications. Like everyone else out there, I want one stylish box on which to toggle between all operating systems and software. Macs aren't quite up there, games wise.

Actually, the idea that x86 is the future makes me feel slightly ill...

I finally decided to install Panther on my machine. Damn slow. Oh the horror... 3 hours 5 minutes to go. :( Oh well, I'll have my Panther by then! :D

Ohh and another question, when a new version of Pearpc comes out, will we have to redo the whole installation process?

CRAP another question, how slow is it? Is it like a 500 mhz pc running XP and 64 mb ram? Or is it like a time slow down, where the FPS is slowed down?

1) Most programs function normally. Just remember there's not net connection, so you'll have to download updates and import them as a CD.

2) No, you don't have to reinstall when updating PearPC. Just replace the program files :)

3) On my 3.4GHz overclocked P4, allocating 512MB ram for OS X, the OS X is really responsive (opening menus and such is really quick). Opening programs is sluggish though, for example, takes about 12 seconds to open System Preferences. I really can't compare this to anything...some things run slow, some don't

well using nightly builds PearPC 0.2 pre from http://www.richardgoodwin.com/pearpc/ every day and upto now i had no problems... using P4 optimized version with panther fyi.

i should note that 0.2 pre feels little more responsive/faster.

so any suggestions for services to turn it off ?

When I started it I got a little command window that said "This program is free software, you can redistribute and/or modify it under the..etc etc" and then that window closed almost instantly and now nothing is happening.

can someone help me please? I'm trying to install 10.3, all works fine till I have to select my partition to install on.. my problem is that there is nothing i can select..before, when i installed 10.2, it worked, i changed my config since then, could someone have a look and find out what I am doing wrong? the path to the images are correct, I'm using the 6GB image...
