[Alpha] Pop Goes the GMail

Question

Pop Goes the GMail

PGtGM has been discontinued. Please use http://www.gnotify.com/gpopper/ instead!

PGtGM sits between you GMail account and your email client, converting messages from the web based mailbox into POP3 messages that a program such as Outlook Express or Firebird can understand.

POP3 server now fully works. You are able to download gmail emails through any email client. SMTP server appears to work.

Please post any bugs you find in the login process to the thread, or problems displaying messages.

Download

NOTE: You need to have the .net runtimes installed. Click Here

i dont see the point of having gigabyte of space when u still want to download it to ur computer...

BASH me if i'm wrong.

I would have to agree with you. If I've got 1000MB on the web, I don't have to worry about downloading stuff so I can delete them off my account, and plus, I can see all my mail no matter which computer I'm using to check it.

They will, unfortunately they're going to charge for it.

19 bucks a month is what they're currently considering.

I've got a way I get this information that I won't name here, but it's true. ;)

uhm, I don't think so pal.

Yahoo offers TWO gb of space for 19$ per YEAR...

So I don't quite see how 19$ per MONTH for half the space can compete with that...

Exactly, there's no way Google will charge $19 per MONTH for POP access. Per year, yes it's very possible...monthly and they'll get nobody.

The "beauty" of Microsoft's .net ?

But as you imagine, someone had to do the same for GMail. Called "pgtgm" (Pop goes the GMail), this windows-only proxy-like program that allows you to use any pop3 email program with your GMail "web-only" account, that is, it works like MrPostman, acting as a pop3 server to your email program (which you have to point to localhost, 127.0.0.1 as the server), and then, the program fetches the messages one by one over a http connection). Heard of the "middleware" buzzword?? Well, this would be it.

The program needs the .Net Framework installed first (a 20-MB download), and some have called the resulting program a memory hog: "downloading 20meg framework to run 73k program is really justifable (sic)" wondered one user in the NeoWin forums. "Doesn't work, and uses 45mb of ram" said another. In the defense of the program, another dot-net advocate replied: "as for 45 meg of ram, thats just the way .NET apps work. they allocate ram in advance".

"This program does not steal passwords and send them to me. Source code will be available to prove this when development has progressed" said the author. So far, I checked his site and source code is still not available. Caveat Emptor. Find the thread about PGTGM here

Is it just me or does the 'new mail' count not reset itself once you've grabbed the new messages?

EDIT: whoops, looks like it goes back to 0 once it checks again after another 10 minutes

Yup, I have my mail check set to 1 mins :)

Im waiting for a Mac Version...

Keep waiting... I see some .net linux ports, but no .net mac ones.

When it goes open source (when gmail goes public) or if a mac developer donates towards the project then they will get the source code and hopefully start reworking it for Macs

Does anyone have Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003? If so, you do not need to download the .NET frameworks from Microsoft. If you have noticed, your Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 CD case comes with two CDs - the Office CD and the Business Contact Manager for Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 CD. The Business Contact Manager CD has the latest version of Microsoft's .NET Framework. You can install it from within there. Also, other such programs that require the .NET Frameworks will usually include them - look at their CDs first before wasting time downloading them!

Jon - excellent program. Been using it for about an hour now. I've read this entire thread, and it looks like you're still replying to the bug reports, so here's mine:

Using outlook 2003

Windows XP .NET framework installed.

Everything seems to be working correctly, except I can't find the spot to turn of the pgtgm sig, and like someone earlier reported, the cc field doesn't seem to be working. When I email two addresses it goes to the first one, but the second one never gets it. When I look at the headers on the mail that did go through there's nothing in the cc field. Seems like pgpgtm is stripping it. Also, pgtgm always reports that I have 1 new email, even if my box is empty. Minor cosmetic stuff. Again, good job.

Rob

edit: the sig and the "1 new email" thing was my idiocy. I was running v 0.7. Those two problems don't happen in v 0.8. The cc thing still isn't working.

Sorry for the premature posting...

hi, just got a gmail account, using outlook express on windows 2000 i can send email from my gmail account but when i try to get email in outlook express it goes to about 1/5th of the "recieving list of messages from server" and gets no further.

I can use the "View emails" thing in gmail and it gets the email.

Any ideas ? tried 0.7 and 0.8

thanks

    • Nothing is stopping you from continuing with your testing cadence. If updates are released every 2 weeks instead of 4, and you test once every 4 weeks, the exact same amount of patches will still be available for you in those 4 weeks. For example: Before 4th week - patch 1, 2, 3, 4 After 2nd week - patch 1 and 2 4th week - patch 3 and 4 Still the same amount after 4.
    • Everyone else has said it. I'm gonna say it - you don't know what you're talking about. I do. I have two laptops. One work, one personal. I have access to two more laptops - both personal. At home I manually update my personal laptop when I see on Neowin that there is an update - I carry on and only apply the updates when I am ready. My work one only updates when my workplace decides to send it - I carry on and only apply the updates (when they actually arrive, which is usually days after the release) when I switch off the laptop at the end of the day as usual. The two other personal laptops only get updated when I get to it which is rarely - the people who own them carry on using them until I get to it and update them. All of the browsers on all laptops are configured to restore the tabs when launched. Google and Microsoft have changed from 6 weeks to 4, and it looks like it's going to move to 2. None of these changes affect how any of these browsers on the laptops are used. Not one jot. My advice to you is stop panicking whenever you see an update. Just carry on with what you're doing. This even benefits you in a way - from your comment you sound like you don't like the changes or the frivolous new features - great - then carry on as before!
    • AMAZON needs to take total accountability for this.
    • Server Summit had a heap of announcements, ADCS changes are baller.
    • Nice, hope they *finally* fixed the issue with the NTFS driver where the system would completely brick during large file copies using the built in driver. It's been broken for years requiring me to use the older, slower, NTFS-3G FUSE driver.
