[Alpha] Pop Goes the GMail

Question

Pop Goes the GMail

PGtGM has been discontinued. Please use http://www.gnotify.com/gpopper/ instead!

PGtGM sits between you GMail account and your email client, converting messages from the web based mailbox into POP3 messages that a program such as Outlook Express or Firebird can understand.

POP3 server now fully works. You are able to download gmail emails through any email client. SMTP server appears to work.

Please post any bugs you find in the login process to the thread, or problems displaying messages.

i used the program for the first time today.. its nice, but annoying.

it would be just fine if it didn't have the option to "check for mail" i'd like it more if it was like the hotmail pop3 program, where all it does is make it work w/ outlook, thunderbird.. etc.

the auto update checking and constant port conflict at startup is annoying even though i already set it to a different port, it comes back after a restart.

To enable just in time (JIT) debugging, the config file for this

Everyone keeps asking why you would want to download if Gmail gives you 1gb of space. I can certainly understand that many users might not want to download messages. I use my E-mail accounts to send large image file attachments - sometimes in .tiff files or .efx files. These are basically 50-100 page hi resolution faxes. It is not unusual for these files to exceed 4mb in size. I need to download these files to my computer so I can convert them to PDF files, add comments, and return them to where they came from. I can't run the risk of my ISP or Gmail being down when I need to access these files. I turn them around with comments within hours. I need them to download automatically as soon as possible in the background without input on my part.

I leave them on Gmail so I can access them from multiple workstations in my office. If you setup Outlook correctly you can automatically download these files to multiple computers so that you have backup copies of all your important attachments on multiple computers as well as on gMail's server. If anyone out there has had a hard drive crash without a recent backup of your documents you know exactly what I'm talking about. Redundency! If you're just using E-mail for saying "Hi how are you, I am fine." You don't care about this at all.

two questions:

1.) is the source code available yet? I was overjoyed when I saw this was written in .NEt (C# or VB?)

2.) if the source is not available, would it be difficult for pop goes the gmail to take the username and password from the POP3 and SMTP sessions, the way yahoo pops does (http://yahoopops.sourceforge.net/)?

I ask because I do not run any non-essential programs in the background on my desktop. Even with a gig of ram and 3.6+GHz of proc I still like to keep things to a bare minimum, so my games can run at LUDICROUS speed. I have another box in my house that runs yahoo pops and would presumably run pop goes the gmail so that my mail client on the big machine just connects to those. And considering my GF just got a gmail invite (from me ;)) it would be nice to both use the same g-mail proxy.

GREAT program!

I love this program and recommend it to everyone who has Gmail already. It works perfectly especially version Ver. 8

So this is my setup:

Using Outlook 2003 on Windows 2000.

1.Having Lotus Notes I'm using the Lotus Notes Connector to receive Lotus Notes E-mail in my Outlook.

2. I have a Hotmail account, so I've got that added to Outlook 2003 as well.

3. Pop goes the Gmail is added and I can see the e-mail within it it, everything sync's fine while it's open.

Problem: My Gmail is delivered into the inbox of my Lotus Notes folder within Outlook. Everytime! Nothing appears in the Gmail folder, but when I do login to Gmail via a web site, the mail is there.

I'm sure it's something simple but anyone who can help would be be nice.

Thanks!

1. Try unchecking then checking the "Pop goes the weasel" music option in frmSplash. It causes a crash.

2. You might want to change the title on frmSplash to "About PGtGM" or something.

3. There should be an option to hide the taskbar icon and balloon bubbles.

4. There should be a command-line option to start and exit silently. This would be used for the "Automatically start PGtGM when you login to Windows" option.

5. PGtGM should be split into 2 EXEs: pgtgmsvr.exe and pgtgmadm.exe. pgtgmsvr.exe contains the main program, while pgtgmadm.exe contains the administrative portion. This splitting would mean a user could create a Start menu shortcut to pgtgmadm.exe if they had disabled the taskbar icon.

Thanks a lot. Nice app.

Kinda odd password shows up as all gs. lol Kinda odd. Wish you justed use ****.

Also, no minimize to system tray? Instead of just hide button. Minimize to system tray is always better in my opipion but make it an option. Please.

Thanks,

Will

I'd prefer it if it just minimised straight to the system tray too.

I really like Rokeys icons in the main program, but would prefer something a little clearer in the system tray - it looks a little crampt. Maybe a google G to show it running and the google star to show you have mail.

Nice program though and it works great.

I haven't been able to install it yet (no .net,) but I was wondering if you could chain it with other pop-proxy servers? I'm using popfile (google it, it's worth your time,) and while popfile is infinitely configurable, I'm hoping that pop-gmail can be set to use different ports.

i got a stupid error... it always says that the default ports are in use... damn thing. then i get this error...

vb6 runtimes weren't as huge.

MFC is good enough for me. small, fast, efficient

Slightly off topic I know...

But I never liked VB. All the programs looked ugly, behaved worse (crash- and hang-wise) than most other Windows programs and they all used the same installer which was really bad. So came .net and VB programs got slightly better.

But who is to pay? Us. The .net runtimes adds to the bloat under the hood. There is more to the .net runtimes than a couple of dll's. The best I can say about .net is that it is easy for lazy programmers. So when there is no alternative, it is okay. But how can something medicore be "great"?

    • Finally we can whole-heartedly recommend the AMD 9070 GRE thanks to this discount by Sayan Sen Earlier this month at Computex 2026 AMD released the Radeon RX 9070 GRE for a global audience. We reviewed the GPU and it scored 8 out of 10 for gaming and 7.5 out of 10 for productivity including things like AI performance. The card launched for $550 which we thought was a bit on the higher side, though currently you are getting the chance to get the Gigabyte Gaming variant of the GPU for just $500 thanks to this discount (purchase link under the specs table down below). As such we can finally whole-heartedly recommend this GPU. The card employs Gigabyte's WINDFORCE cooling system which combines multiple design elements such as alternate-spinning Hawk fans, a vapor chamber, and composite heat pipes to manage heat dissipation. The Server-grade Thermal conductive gel further helps in this department. The inclusion of a semi-passive cooling mode allows the fans to remain inactive under low workloads, which allows for reduced noise operation during lighter usage. There is dual BIOS switch that allows toggling between performance and silent modes. The technical specs of the Gigabyte Gaming RX 9070 GRE OC is given in the table below: Specification Value Boost Clock Up to 2920 MHz Game Clock Up to 2340 MHz Stream Processors 3072 Memory Clock 18 Gbps Memory Size 12 GB Memory Type GDDR6 Memory Bus 192-bit Memory Bandwidth 432 GB/s Card Bus Interface PCI Express 5.0 Max Resolution 7680 × 4320 Max Displays (Multi-view) 4 Card Dimensions 288 × 132 × 50 mm (L × W × H) Recommended Power Supply 700 W Power Connectors 2 × 8-pin Display Outputs 2 × DisplayPort 2.1a 2 × HDMI 2.1b Get it at the link below: GIGABYTE Gaming Radeon RX 9070 GRE 12GB GDDR6 GPU (GV-R907GREGAMING OC-12GD): $549.99 + $50 discount with promo code in mail => $499.99 (Sold and Shipped by Newegg US) This Newegg deal is US-specific and not available in other regions unless specified.
