a couple of questions.

1. is there a keyboard shortcut to close a tab?

2. is there a way to get my middle mouse button to open links in new tabs?

CTRL-W is the close tab command.

Using Firefox .9 it works if I click my middle button on a link it opens it in a new tab already. Do you mean to make it the active tab? I think there is a TAB PREFERENCES extension for that.

There is a more powerful one too that does a lot more:

1. ctrl+w

2. Middle clicking a link should open it in a new tab automatically

/edit

too late, however you dont need an extension to open a new tab in the foreground, that option can be found in tools>options>advanced
