How is FireFox great?

The same people who think Firefox starts as fast as IE think OpenOffice ( the slowest office suit in the world) loads faster than Office 2003. That's correct, explorer is always running and it's good to have it as a system component, specially when there are so many programs that use it's rendering engine.

Try viewing some pornographical pages, they include many spyware/adware for FireFox, you get promted to install a Mozilla extension and it shows you the green puzzle icon. And the funny thing is they are selected by default, the same problem as with IE's ActiveX so if user does not read but rather hits enter he will install it, the difference is the Firefox user does not believe he has spyware because he has not been using IE

That made me laugh, haha "try viewing pornographical pages"...

And the bookmark manager in IE makes me want to :x

Well it at least exports the bookmarks as SHORTCUTS and does not add them to a silly HTML file so it's very easy to manage through programs like TrueLaunch bar giving superior experience to firefox, it's easier to convert shortcuts to a html page than a html page to shortcuts.

If you don't like it, why do you care what everyone else thinks about it?

if you look back, you'll see this thread was started by the same guy who started a thread in the mac forums about why people would want to buy a server from apple. he likes starting petty arguments, about all you can expect from a 14 year old i guess. pretty sad, though.

Never tried OpenOffice, but seriously, Firefox is a bit faster than when launching than IE. You're making sweeping generalizations, which are incorrect.

EDIT: Just timed it...Firefox: 2 seconds, IE 4 seconds on a 2.0 Celeron with 384 megs of RAM.

How so?
if the big things for firefox are tabbed browsing and an ad blocker then.... uhh.. myie2 anyone?  :p

Some more reasons:

Popup blocking, Download Manager with pause/resume, Integrated google search and in-page search, faster page loading, much better options panel and configurations options (about:config too), more secure (a fact), standards support

Well i'm a recent Firefox convert and have been made a believer. Was using IE until i get fed up with it's annoying memory leaks and crashes, not to mention attraction to adware. So thus seeked an alternative and found Firefox. Never looked back.

I love the tab browsing.... never found a use for pressing my scrolll wheel button but now i have! It's soooo convenient! A lot lighter on system resources too and it has all the functionality that IE ever had, plus more.

Load times are hardly noticeable - and after it's first load it's instantaneous. I don't know why it should matter anyway.... my system is up the majority of the time with hardly any reboots and more often than not i have a browser window open. Perhaps these IE diehards are complaining because they often suffer reboots? =)

How so?

There are MANY plug-ins and programs for IE that do that and they do it in a more professional manner than Firefox does by default.

rstroud do you use alternate shell than explorer? Because it's a SYSTEM COMPONENT it's supposed to load instantly, even on your machine, perhaps you have enabled compression of content and compressed IE's directory?

  • 0

Nope, default shell. And no compression is enabled on my machine. And yes, I know it's a system component, I'd gladly ship you my laptop so you can see. ;) I don't care if IE loads a fraction of a second better, I just don't like using it.

And if you visit shady sites, you can expect shady things....

removed.

Firefox is good and fast and more secure.

Exactly, Firefox does not suffer from the dozens of security holes and issues that Internet Explorer does.

Firefox is also including a nice: (1) Download manager, (2) Great Popup Blocking, (3) No MSN Whoreware, (4) Tabbed browsing interface.

Sorry but the reverse is also true. The shortcut icons are faily proprietary, as every other browser uses the html file that I have ever used. Also, I would venture to say that just about no one really cares how it exports the bookmarks to use wiht other programs.

Anyway my point was that the bookmarks manager is FAR superior to the cumbersome IE shortcut manager.

There are plenty of spyware programs that don't ask the user whatsoever in IE, thanks to it's security holes.

are you talking about the thing that pops up with a file name ****.xpi? thats the only thing i got and thats a bug...Upcoming release they are supposed to make it so the only ***.xpi files that you can install are only from the extension pages connected to the mozilla foundation. like mozillzina and textureize, net

Correction: firefox has crappy download manager although it's better than the one IE "uses", please download some better ones, most of them work with all browsers nowadays.

[beta code] what's MSN whoreware? you mean like the control things that show only on IE when viewing MSN pages like Hotmail? Or are you refering to MSN Explorer the browser I'm interested in gettin subscription to?

  • 0

BTW although I am protecting IE I use FireFox most of the time now as I love some of it's plug-ins as they are free compared to many commercial plug-ins for IE that I just don't want to buy, I just don't like people to make everything look better than it is just because they are in low with it, like Linux for example, it has been hyped up so many times a lot of people have lost faith in it. Linux is ready for the desktop...

supernova_00 yes that "bug"... so it seems they get patched in IE and Firefox around the same time when SP2 arrives...

Correcting overruled thankyou very much. That's just your opinion of the download manager. Please do not inflict your views on me and try to make me belive them. I do not.

MSN*M* Whoreware = Free Messenger, packed with ads. (N) (N)

MSN Whoreware = You pay for MSN Hotmail and still get ads all over the window. (N) (N)

Since when has IE had that built in? It had shortcut to windows messenger on the toolbar, that's all. You can get adblockers and pop-up blockers for IE too...

to say the truth, i've been a Myie2 user for a while, but im starting to get fed up with some of the problems im having with the IE engine, especially when a page that has one of those "Must press yes to view webpage.". if it pops up, it crashes my browser, so im slowly making the switch to firefox. im going through the learning curve. i wish i could customize the toolbar like in MyIe2, and i like having buttons that close the tabs that i can move to where i want, and not have it on the right side out of the way of where my mouse is.

    • No. Windows 8 had little to no spywhare, is actually faster than 7 but it has the dreaded start screen, nothing that you could not fix with start8. Windows ME crashed often, but was shotlived and replaced by XP, which is a much better windows in itself.
    • Windows 8 was uninspiring but it was fine / worked. It was just overshadowed by how great Windows 7 was. Windows ME seem to be just unstable for most people - I was using Windows 2000, which was far superior. The two best versions are Windows 7 and 2000
    • I don't think ME was that bad. The stability issues were mostly caused by drivers. This was when the switch from vxd to wdm was happening. The other complaint was not being able to shut down into DOS anymore which was silly with XP right around the corner.
    • As much as I hated Windows 8, although I never used it personally on any of my own machines, I think Windows Me was hands down the worst OS from MS. I have Windows 11 on 2 unsupported machines and haven't had any issues and I actually kind of like it. Still hate how slow Windows updates are though.
    • Why do you think they whol industry would be done? Agree a lot has shifted around the launch with devs moving their dates to avoid the timeframe around the launch. But if this fails, it'll be talked about, analysed, Rockstar will likely be ridiculed but people will move on. Others devs might be more cautious about these large games but I don't think one game will change the entire industry
