Comcast High Speed Cable Internet

Recommended Posts

Alright. I made the switch. Being a long-time DSL user, I was slightly reluctant to switch to cable. However, they're now claiming much faster speeds than my DSL and they're $10 cheaper per month. So we were at Best Buy last Friday and I picked up the Motorola Suftboard modem and the Comcast High Speed Internet Self Install Kit. A couple days later, I attempted to install it in the house. It was extremely simple. However, I encountered a problem. We have a really old house and the only cable jack is in the basement in the laundry room. The install kit only comes with 25 feet of coaxial cable. I decided to call up Comcast to get someone to come and install it. They came this morning and the guy went through the floor and all this other crazy stuff to get it to work - and he didn't use any of the stuff we bought in the Self Install Kit. So then he hooked it up and the whole thing of him coming was only $20! Thats only $5 more than the Self Install Kit. The guy activated it and everthing. Then I called Comcast about an offer I saw on TV that theres a deal running that you get a free $75 MasterCard Gift Card when you activate Comcast - if you mention it to them. So I asked and it turned out that offer expired 10 days ago. But she said there was an offer that you get the first 3 months half price! She mentioned it to me! I thought that was great.

My internet is considerably faster with Comcast. Video is amazing. What's really cool is Comcast's 'The Fan.' There's a link to The Fan from Comcast.net. It is a little applet that has links to video clips - movie trailers, news stories, weather reports. clips from G4, clips from CBS, clips from TechTV, clips from Fox News - tons of great stuff. And the whole thing is BLAZING fast. It's great. I downloaded that trailer for Fahrenheit 9/11 in a matter of seconds. You just click the window the the video gets larger. Its REALLY clear. Excellent quality. You can even have a watch list where it customized the different genres you like. Also, you can 'save' the video. It basically bookmarks it and puts in on a different tab on The Fan. You can also enlarge the video - this takes a split second, and the quality gets even better.

The webmail is nice - 10 MB - eeh. You also get 10 MB of web hosting. You get FTP access.

I only pay 39.95 including modem lease....

Isn't that for a few months as a first time offer?

Comcast is laggy and has crap/support/privacy rights.

Their support took over 4 months to get a fix done, my internet would cut off every few hours for at least three hours at a time, but what is wrong with their 'privacy' rights? Once they got that issue fixed, I think Comcast is great.

I find this really interesting, you guys (not all) are bashing this guy because he's happy with the speed and his dealings with Comcast and you guys are telling how much Comcast sucks...I've had Comcast for 2 years and haven't had a single problem with them. I needed a service call about 6 months into it, I called them in the morning and they were here and had it fixed by 4 p.m. and I'm in one of their biggest market (the Detroit Metro area). If you are unhappy with them than cancel your service don't slag them because it's not perfect for you. Did they raise the price when they went to 3mbs? Nope...they gave you mor efor the same price you were already spending. Stop being ****ed because they bought your precious TechTv and took off CFH and be thankful you have high speed...

Ethereal welcome and thanks for sharing...your not the only one that gives them high marks and I hope your service with them is as uneventful as mine.

I was a Comcast HiSpeed Internet user 2 years ago and they sucked bawlz... I've switched to Verizon DSL and it's run problem free since day-one. I avoid the crappy software they give you to use with windows. Besides I can d/l stuff 24/7 without worrying about loosing my service due to bandwidth limits, my anime fansub collection has grown significantly thanks to Verizon DSL, Comcast would have shut my connection off for all bandwith I used to d/l all that anime. Have they provided a newsserver? When I used Comcast they only had a deal with Giganews that only allowed Comcast members a measely 1GB a month d/l limit. 4 episodes of Wolf's Rain and I was locked out until the following month. Verizon's newsserver carries 30,000 newsgroups and retention time is fairly decent, about 7 - 10 days I think. Comcast maybe faster but they really don't offer much else...

Uhm, I never had TechTV or G4, so that didn't bother me one tiny bit.

I don't care for the way they handle things. I got a bandwith abuse letter from them, however Comcast does NOT tell you what the bandwith limits are. Funny, for an "unlimited broadband" service, they sure do limit it pretty well. Also, we get basic cable through our complex here, they don't count that as having service from them, so I have to pay 57.99 (plus tax) a month for this.

Other than those two things, and a few other smaller things, I like Comcast. Only very rarely are there any network problems, and usually they get taken care of very quickly.

I've tried looking and wasn't able to find anything. But I've downloaded over 10GB in files + my Internet usage in a month and never was charged anything. I don't know how much people use in bandwidth, so I'm not sure if that is a lot or not.

Congrats on getting Cable internet man. I do think they are a bit better than Charter. However, this is only because Charter has been a bit behind the times. Now that Charter has upgraded their lines to 3mbps / 256kbps, they will give Comcast a run for their money. People may not like Charter either, but in the past 3 years of having service with them, I have never experienced any severe downtime. Usually, it's a problem with my own network.

Just don't rag on this guy's review. He is extremely happy with his cable service just as he should be. If he elects to give Comcast a 9/10, then so be it.

Normally Comcast won't look at you unless your over 100+ GB in a month, so I wouldn't worry with 10 GB.

    • Anthropic introduces Claude Tag, a new AI teammate for Slack by Fiza Ali Anthropic has announced Claude Tag, a new feature that lets teams work with Claude directly inside Slack. The idea is simple: once Claude is added to a Slack workspace and given access to selected channels, users can tag @Claude in conversations and assign tasks. Claude can then work through those requests using connected tools and data sources before posting its results back into a Slack thread. What makes Claude Tag different from a typical chatbot is that it's designed to operate as a shared assistant for an entire team rather than a single user. Everyone in a channel interacts with the same Claude instance. This allows the team members to see ongoing work and continue tasks started by others. Furthermore, Anthropic says the AI can build context over time by following conversations in channels where it has permission to operate. This means users don't have to repeatedly provide the same background information for every request. The system is also designed for asynchronous work. Instead of waiting for responses in a chat window, users can assign a task to Claude and return later once the work is complete. Anthropic says Claude can break larger requests into multiple steps and use connected tools to complete them. Moreover, the system can also schedule follow-up tasks and continue working on projects over extended periods. Another feature allows Claude to keep the users updated and follow up on unresolved tasks when its optional "ambient" mode is enabled. The company says the tool is already being used internally for software development, data analysis, support workflows, and debugging. According to Anthropic, around 65% of its product team's code is now generated through its internal version of Claude Tag. For organisations concerned about security, administrators can control which channels, tools, and data sources Claude can access. Separate Claude instances can also be configured for different departments, helping keep information isolated between teams. Administrators can also monitor activity logs, review completed tasks, and set spending limits at both the organisation and channel level. Claude Tag is now available in beta for Claude Enterprise and Claude Team customers and runs on Claude Opus 4.8 that was announced this May. The feature will also replace Anthropic's existing Claude in Slack application, with current users able to migrate within a 30-day migration window. Lastly, eligible customers will receive introductory credits to help teams evaluate the new experience.
