Sony's 'choise' to include ATRAC3 in all their MP3 players is an unfortunate one, but unavoidable. When you are a company as big as Sony with as many divisions you are bound to run into trouble. You see back when sony was planning their first digitial music player, the Network Walkman MS1, the Sony Music label portion of the company absolutely blocked the electronics division release of a device that could play MP3's. So, Sony's engineers came to a comprimize with the Sony Music division and thus we have ATRAC3.

So don't go biting of Sony Electronic's head for this, blame Sony Music.

i just like the brushed-aluminium case. i don't like how the button is on the side, and the green backlight could be changed to dark blue. get rid of the crappy format restriction, add in OGG playback, and you've got yourself a winning MP3 HDD player. (Y)

though i don't really trust Sony on sound quality... :/

well that's prolly tru but i had a Mini-Disc and the only think i hated about it was that i had to use special software which I guess would be required for this device too... so i prolly wont get it but damn it certainly looks good. But i'll still sample it anyways,

The very fact that you've gotta transcode your MP3s to ATRAC to listen to them is disgusting and enough to make anyone not buy it.

<------ Gutted...

It's not that ATRAC3 is bad format.... it's just transcoding sucks..... I mean MiniDisc (full quality) uses ATRAC-R too and sounds very good. And if it's made by SONY you'll have to transcode everything... why can't they leave MP3s as MP3s.. and convert any ripped from CD music to ATRAC.... that is a middle solution that peeps could be happy with.

I'm with Dazzla... SONY make nothing but quality products.... I'm gutted too....

PS: Nice job getting that Apple reference to a non-existent and unrevealed product as "competition" in there. Cheque is in the mail.
