I remember Windows Me having an extremely fast boot. It got rid of real-mode DOS at bootup (from 95/98) so it would boot up faster. Except its stability isn't very good. From past experiences, I remember Me booting up fastest.

Ya I remembered ME very horriable stabilty sucked *** man it was the ****** OS to come out

any OS is an ok server... but being a server is illegal dude. you need to know that. you can't become your own server unless you have full concent and/or permission from your ISP... i know your intention now, and will no longer help you before i get warned.

I've only fooled around with Linux a bit, but wouldn't a version of Linux, setup correctly boot fast?

I had good luck with WinME, it was very stable on my system, but I didn't push it with exotic hardware.

Considering your system resources, I would think Win98SE, with all updates would be about as fast as

you could expect. I've got my dads computer (P3@800mhz, 512meg ram) running winXP, and it's not that

bad. He leaves in on 24/7, and it runs weeks between reboots. He doesn't run games or anything, just

basically running a database for his record album collection (over 5,000 LP's, 600 CD's, 200 box LP sets),

email, word processing. My mom is about the only one that plays games.....if you call running scrable and

her sewing programs taxing a computer LOL.

stay away from windows me and windows xp,

maybe try some linux and run it as a server(dont know if winamp or .wma can be used or played in linux)

another thing... are you trying to make a shoutcast radio server?

who the hell cares about stability when all its doing is running winamp??

usually a fresh install of any MS OS has booted up for me in less than 15. you can partition the drive right after an install, so the music is all on a separate partition. on the other one, all you have is the OS and winamp. i'd suggest 98SE or 2000

you could always use nLite and slim down a copy of xp with slipstreamed security fixes. you can get the install ISO down to a negligible size (<100mb)
