Doom III is out there! W00T!

for some reason it wont let me set the quality above medium? if i do, it goes all hazy.

specs:

p4 2.8

120gb

512ram

ati 9700

i know my ram is just about minimum requiremnets, but would that cause my problem, or is my computer just not able to handle it, i didnt think it was that bad heh

i only said that Carmack gonna sell the engine to 60 companies..

Oh, do you have the list?

..and can afford new expensive cars.

So because he can afford it (and we don't even know that), that makes him greedy? Give me a break. Carmack is not even the CEO of id Software, Todd Hollenshead is. Carmack is the technical director. I don't think he even is involved in licensing the engine, someone else (Marty Stratton does that I think, not completely sure) does!

A couple of useful commands to add / edit in your config (yes some have been posted already, but I thought these were important)

seta com_showFPS "1"

Shows your framerate.

seta g_showProjectilePct "1"

Shows your accuracy.

seta g_projectileLights "1"

This was disabled by default (probably due to my crap video card) but it makes a huge difference to the look of the game if it's not on.

seta g_muzzleFlash "1"

As above.

seta g_showPlayerShadow "1"

Yet another one that was disabled by default; makes you cast a shadow - I've manged to scare myself with it a couple of times as I pass by a light and think I see something moving.

,Aug 3 2004, 12:43] Thanks for the switches andrew.

I reckon that if I turn on the accuracy one it's gonna be really low for me. Most of the time I'm running backwards shooting into a dark area where I think the monster is :D

No problem - I've got a pretty low accuracy, but that's due to my framerate.

I still hope there's a command to limit the framerate in doom 3 - having it so that it doesn't jump from 20-60 fps in places would help make things feel much smoother, but it's not the same command as previous games.

Yeah I would like to know that also

Timko, in that config I gace you, it has FPS and Acc turned on :)

I have played about 12 hours of Doom 3, almost near the end. The first couple hours were amazing, I was so psyched and it was unbelievable that I was finally playing Doom 3 after hearing about it 3 years ago. It was really fun for about 5 hours then I felt the game is just too linear. Just go from Point A to Point B and kill everything, I understand that is how FPS are supposed to be. But I think it is just too repetitive. I am hoping Half Life 2 has a more complex story and is more similar to Far Cry.

Just my 2 cents...

,Aug 3 2004, 10:43] it seems I need to paste what I said in another thread:

...saying that, despite what some people are saying, Im enjoying this, I dont know what you people where expecting, ID never said something about spectacular AI or so, they promised an horror game, they delivered it, period. Maybe its something I cannot understand, but then I dont care, I am happy with it, I am enjoying, guess who wins ;)

I have to agree with you, I'm enjoying the game as well, but its more of a horror game than anything, also as most FPS games are, its the same idea over and over again and again, meh... can't wait to finish this game and on to the next one ;)

Well, I've had a good play for about 2 hours. AWESOME graphics, not as scary as I thought it would be. REALLY hard though, I'm playing on veteran and having a hell of a time (no pun intended).

Graphics are nice at smooth, running at 1280x1024 at High Quality (no AA). My system specs are P4 2.4C /w HT, ABIT IS7, Radeon 9800 Pro, 1GB of PC3500 GeiL RAM running in dual-channel, and a Maxtor 120GB PATA drive. I haven't overclocked anything. FPS is pretty steady about 40-50, although every now and then the frame rate drops down to 5 for a second then goes straight back up. Not sure what that's about, but it's never happened at a time where I need the frame rate so I'm not worried. Hopefully this will make some people feel better, [H]ardOCP's Doom 3 Hardware Guide was definitely a bit conservative. You don't need a super-high end video card to play at a good res.

Just thought you might be curious, these were already enabled in my config. Thanks for the heads up though, especially on the playershadow (that was not enabled) - it rocks! (Y)

yeah i still find it scary, but dark games always do to me.....

i heard it gets better towards the end so im gonna go for it later on when im in the mood :D

When something jumps out at you in the dark, chances are good you'll be scared.

I ran the test both at 1024x768 and at 1280x1024 - here are my results:

1024x768 FPS 1st Run FPS 2nd Run

Demo1 - Ultra High Quality 30.7 33.8

Demo1 - High Quality 38.7 42.7

Demo1 - Medium Quality 44.6 48

Demo1 - Low Quality 45.3 48.1

1280x1024

Demo1 - Ultra High Quality 22.1 23.3

Demo1 - High Quality 27.2 29.1

Demo1 - Medium Quality 29.9 31.4

Demo1 - Low Quality 30.3 31.5

I got these by going through doing the CTRL - ALT - ~ (tilde) and then typing "timedemo demo1" and enter. I was pleased with what my system was doing - but I will continue to tweak it out here for some better numbers soon.

These results were captured from the following system:

AMD64 3200+

1GB Ram

128MB ATI Radeon 9800 Pro All-In-Wonder

Running at fullscreen with the brightness enhanced (the game is VERY dark - it needs some extra brightness to see to details in some areas).

Even with a GB of ram, the first pass on the demo is choppy, so no matter what you have, run it twice.

Have fun.

is this the biggest thread on neowin?

i have my thing to show maximun post per page/whatnot...

it comes in at 37 pages

nope this thread is not the largest on neowin..

its my post i made a few months back:

I'm hearing a lot of people complain about using flashlight or the gun at a time, anyway around this ? :(

Yes, it is quite annoying, why not a gun in one hand and the other a flashlight... ergh! LOL

They aren't 'DRM', because, they're nothing to do with DigitalRightsManagement Some Anti-Cheat services I did see are starting to *use* the TPM to store creds/tokens, which it's for, but it's not involved beyond that. I would suggest doing some reading, both articles are fairly lengthy, but for MS Learn they're actually pretty decent at explaining the concepts.
