Slipstream SP2 Into Dell CD

Recommended Posts

The $OEM$ folder is usually drivers. Might not want to remove it.

Not on the Dell CD. The Dell CD contains no drivers.

It contains

PCHealth files

MS Java VM

Dell Solution Center icon set

Registry tweaks to enable volume icon, disable Messenger service, tweak the time synchronization setting, disable autoreboot on BSOD

There are 4 sets of files that 'pre-activate' the system.

Files:

oembios.bin

oembios.sig

oembios.dat

oembios.cat

on startup check the BIOS for certain tests. If the test passes it loads with no activation. If the test fails it asks you to activate. These files are customized by Microsoft per the request of the royalty OEMs.

Are those four files specifically coded for Dell pc's only, or could you use those files on other hardware for pre-activation?

They are coded specifically for certain hardware. You can't move them around and try to ... break activation :shifty:

OK. No reason for me to do this, but I have various Dell Optiplex models where I work...gx1-gx270. They all came with Reinstallation disks with SP1a. Is there a way to find out which hardware versions I can use with those disks (by looking at those oem files? :ninja:

u can delete the sp1 file

thanks

thats correct...nothing worth saving in there unless you want to

useless info! I provided the files for some of them dell files :ninja:

Chill, dude. I asked about the same thing some time back on Dell's forums and someone provided that link. It was useful to me as it helped me get the original system properties window back. All I was doing was sharing something that helped me once. Not sure what you meant about it being your files, but I had nothing to do with that.

Thanks for the info on the pre-activation files though. This is the first time I seen those files identfied.

So when Dell uses those crappy Pro 100 M NIC drivers, XP magically has drivers for it, when my version of XP doesn't? Are they buried somewhere else on the CD?

Too bad they don't take advantage of a built-in feature to have these drivers install during the install.

some stuff here ... <a href='http://unattended.<< spam >>/index.htm' target='_blank'>http://unattended.<< spam >>/index.htm</a> ...

does this help? ... I'm reading through it all at the moment ... looks useful!

edit .... Sorry! ... didn't realise it was considered spam! ....

well, I successfully installed my dell cd onto an HP machine, and it said it was already activated post install... :ninja:

You must go to the i386 folder, find winnt.sif , open it with notepad...

I really didn't think that comment would offend anyone but s:blink:link:

I managed to identify those files during the IBM recovery process. Weird stuff :ninja:inja:

NOTE - those files control activation it looks like. Anyone remember the infamous Corp conversion ki:ninja:inja: they have those files in there lol:alien:lien:

DJ Prem: if you want it done your way you must do what SkyyPunk did ... make it unattended. If you want it still there, without making it unattended, you'll need to make an SFX archive that extracts it to the system32 folder and insert the command that runs the SFX archive in CMDLINES.TXT. Insert the SFX archive into the $OEM$ folder and no where else.

Well IIRC the GX1 can't be preactivated. Just use the disk for the GX270, it should be a-OK.

oh btw i hear GX280's are a pain in teh ass to deploy, :ninja:inja:

It's ok, man. I probably read it wrong. I was posting from work and it was a little crazy there today.

Again, thanks for the info :)

SkyyPunk, I will try your method this weekend since you mentioned that the pre-activation process was not affected. It will be a while before I reinstall XP because I have not long ago have done that and I don't want to go through that process again for a while. But at least I will be ready for the next one :)

Could be a pebcak. We use sysprep for our Win2k rollouts. Our image design office uses the PS/2 mouse and keyboard in the lab, so when we rollout there is a loooooonnnnnngggggg delay after the mini-setup before it detects the USB mouse and keyboard. 10 times out of 10 the keyboard is last (I just sit there pressing Num Lock repeatedly until it eventually finds it).

I haven't seen the GX280 yet so I can't speak for that, but I would question the expertise of the people who posted those issues.

  • 3 weeks later...

I tried slipstreaming Dell OEM SP1a CD to SP2. Now, when I boot I get:

"File usbehci.sys is corrupt"

From earlier post. I too am getting the same error and I have downloaded the files from the earlier post and put them in the 1386 folder prior to burning.

This happens will several versions of the DELL OEM restore CD's

Also is it critical to have the volume label the same as the original CD when making the bootable image?

Do you mean you get that error message booting from the CD or booting after the installation?

I made my disc using Skyypunk's method. The CD boots and begins the installation normally. I haven't used it for reinstalling yet because I reinstalled not too long ago and was going to wait awhile.

I get the error after booting and during the install while copying files. I have tried with different DELL XP Pro CDs and burned several different ones, so not a bad CD. BTW I am building the Slipstream manually with the deploy cab from MS. Then using Roxio to make the image.

    • RevPDF 4.5.0 by Razvan Serea RevPDF is a free, fully offline PDF editor for Windows, macOS, and Linux that lets you edit text and images directly inside PDF files — no internet connection, no account, and no cloud uploads required. Unlike bloated alternatives that demand subscriptions and constant connectivity, RevPDF fits in under 60MB on desktop while delivering a complete editing toolkit: annotate, redact, sign, compress, split, merge, convert, and reorganize pages, all processed locally on your device. Smart font matching ensures edited text blends seamlessly with the original, and multi-language support includes RTL scripts such as Arabic and Hebrew. Where most PDF editors force you to choose between features and simplicity, RevPDF manages both. You can build interactive forms from scratch with text fields, checkboxes, and dropdowns, permanently redact sensitive data before sharing, draw freehand on contracts and diagrams, and add custom watermarks — all without a single file leaving your machine. Edit Text and Images Directly Inside PDFs RevPDF supports true inline PDF editing — not just annotation layers on top of a document, but actual modification of existing text and images within the file. A smart font-matching engine identifies the font used in the original document and applies it automatically when you make edits, so changes blend naturally with the surrounding content. You can reposition elements, resize images, and update text across single pages or entire documents. RevPDF 4.5.0 release notes: This is one of the biggest updates to RevPDF yet. A lot of things people have been asking for are finally here. New Features Auto Redaction Permanently redact sensitive text and areas from your PDFs before sharing. Clean, irreversible, and fully offline. Comments, Links & Bookmarks Add comments for review, insert clickable links, and create bookmarks to jump around long documents without scrolling forever. Find & Replace Search across the whole document and replace text in one go. Long overdue. Split Pages Vertically or Horizontally Split any page down the middle, vertically or horizontally. Perfect for scanned books or double-page spreads. New Drawing Tools More tools for freehand drawing and markup, better for annotations, sketches, and detailed notes. Continuous Scrolling in Editor The editor now scrolls continuously through pages instead of jumping between them. Working through long documents is a lot smoother now. PDF Metadata Editor View and edit the metadata stored inside your PDFs, including title, author, subject, and keywords. Better Font Matching Text edits now blend in more naturally by doing a better job of matching the original font. Tabbed PDF Viewer Open multiple PDFs at once in tabs and switch between them without going back to the home screen. Add Links Insert hyperlinks anywhere in your PDF, to external URLs or to other pages within the document. Share & Print Shortcuts Share or print directly from the editing screen, home screen, and viewer. No extra steps. Minor Updates Paste images directly from clipboard into your PDF New image editing tools for more control over images inside documents Bug Fixes Fixed file saving issues on Windows and Linux Everything still works fully offline. No login, no cloud, no account. Your files stay on your device. • Interesting. I'm not using a VPN with my phone. I tried though my home internet (Rogers) and my cellular internet (Telus) using their respective DNS servers and both trigger the dialog above.
