Kids going off to college should get a pc to make things easier. With Apple to be phasing out Rosetta 2 soon, capability is going to start becoming an issue again. That being said, if you are a power user Macs are great. I been able to get around most of the PC compability issues with virtualization and Wine, except for maybe a few games. Those would be the newer games like the new Monster Hunter. Even that game has issues on PCs that don't meet certain specs. Currently the only way to justify the sticker price is to think of it is 2 computers not one.
OMG, the base Mini now with the 16 GB "fix" was a great deal even before.
I can warmly recommend a Thunderbolt 4 external drive case as a companion for media/photo/archival storage. 256 GB is usually enough for the OS, all the apps, and then some, but for extra storage needs yeah, go with 512 GB or if you need more, use external. The Apple tax on internal drive storage quickly gets cost inefficient and ruins the value of this beast.
