2 iBook questions

Recommended Posts

So i got my my ibook about 2 weeks ago and i love it, but i have 2 quick questions. First question, can i upgrade the harddrive in it?? I noticed that out of 30 gig, i only have 11 left and i only know where some of that went. So im curious if i can i can just swap drives out, pull the 30 and perhaps move up to a 60 or something along those lines. Second question and this is just a random thought really... is there any way to change the color of the light on the front that pulses when the ibook is sleeping?? Something tells me that pulsing little red light would look sweet. Thanks in advance.

You can change the hard disk, but not without voiding your warranty and a lot of hassle. I'm not certain but I would imagine the same goes for the LED on the front.

Here's a link showing how to get into an (older) iBook: http://homepage.mac.com/itiburon/cybergreg/iBook500HD.html Just as an example of what is needed to pop in a new HD.

Hmm.... it does seem like a bit much to do for a harddrive and I really don't want to void the warranty on a brand new ibook. I wonder if the techs at the store would do it?? That shouldn't void the warranty then, probably cost too much though. I guess i'll start looking at external drives.

i switched the hard disk on my new ibook to a faster 7200rpm one. the 7k60. It really improves the overall speed of the ibook especially loading and booting times, and whats more, it actually improved on my battery life!

I found a helpful guide on pulling apart the ibook g4 on macbidouille.com (french site), and just google translated the whole page. It has pics step by step. It took about 1-1.5 hrs making sure i taped every screw to a piece of paper with a drawing of the relevent location on my ibook, and that way it was pretty easy to put back together.

    • The level of stupidity at Google and Microsoft is beyond belief. All they are doing by killing this is forcing people to jump over to Firefox and ditch them all together, therefore giving Firefox the market boost it needs to finally crush them all in the end.
