Should smoking be banned in Canada?

Today, Manitoba and New Brunswick started legislation to ban smoking in all public places. With smoking being unpopular in Canadian society, the provinces may end up following suit. So I would like to hear your opinions concerning this issue.

I think BC already has similar legislation in place. I'm completly for banning smoking. All it does is tie up our health care system.

I dont know WHY on earth in our modern society where we KNOW for a fact that smoking kills, that people still start this horrible habbit. :no:

Do you want to ask if smoking should be banned from all public areas or from everywhere (both public space and private residences)? I'd give a different answer to those two questions.

Here in Ireland we have banned smoking in pubs.

In Norway we have come a long way, but still a lot to do. No smoking indoor in any public place (Shopping malls, offices, pubs, restaurants, schools, hospitals, shops etc...).

But they are still allowed to smoke almost everywhere outdoors! :angry:

Normal smoking, in my opinion, should be banned from all public areas (Resaurants, parks, theaters etc). People should be able to smoke in their own homes, own cars and other private property. They shouldn't be allowed to smoke in the same residence as where minors live though. Also, certain bars should be able to allow smoking if they have a special permit which costs x amount a year to obtain and that money would go towards schools or somehting.

Very good point, but the bars may be a bit questionnable on both sides of the debate.

I'm not Canadian so I am refraining from commenting except to say this: I wish you all the best up there in making an educated decision. :) Also my grandpa's wife (who is not my grandma by marriage) is from Canada so this may affect her more than it would me. Even though she does not smoke.

Australia is getting like that now. Most of the pubs and clubs are stopping people from smoking inside, and their owners are complaining about a loss of business. But most of the smokers I know think that it's a good idea. If they've got to go outside to smoke, then they'll do it.

I mean, seriously, what's the big deal about going outside?

Definetly should be highly restricted so that its only allowed where it can't affect anyone else. (I dont have a problem if they want to hurt themselves in stupid ways, but they could at least pick a way that doesnt hurt everyone around them :angry: )

Smoking shouldn't be banned.

But Smokers shouldn't violate other peoples right to clean air in public places.

I toke,and I never make people breathe my sidestream smoke.

Cigarettes smokers just need to be more considerite of the rights of people around them!

Just smoke at home.If you cant control yourself,maybe you have a drug(nicotine) problem.
