Why would I want to pay my tax dollars to fix someone who smoked there whole life?

They should pay for there own damn health care since the smoking is costing ME money

BAN IT

So also ban chips, butter, french fries, beer, wine, so that I won't have to pay my tax dollars to fix big and fat people

dixit"They should pay for there own damn health care since the overweighting and heart desease is costing ME money"

AMEN!

but i don't see ppl are talking about "costing ME money"

fact: SMOKERS PAY TAX OVER THEIR CIGS!

so they sort of pay for their own treatment

i was watching mtv the other day and they were talking with this fat kid in america who was waiting to be approved for a free gastric bypass. apparently you can apply and get a free gastric bypass if you are obese and you can prove your obesity is causing you emotional damages, so isnt tax money paying for this?

I don't live in Canada so I can't say for them, but I sure wish it would be banned in the US. I can't stand it :x

I could agree with that, myself as a retired smoker :shifty: do find the smell of cigarettes quite disgusting, but when your smoking you don't smell it yourself. Thats why i'm for banning smoking in public buildings but sustain smokingparts or even smoker-only bars & clubs that type of stuff.

I really get annoyed by people that only say: "I hate smokers". I think smokers in general do realise people don't like someone smoking next to then they are eating. so why won't the non-smokers be a little more gentle aswell and meet eachother in the middle.

I don't think smoking should be banned. Smoking is a freedom of will or whatever and people have the right to do it to their bodies. the government makes millions off cigarette taxes and stuff, and if people are stupid enough to try it and get addicted then so be it. I feel that it should be banned in public places like buildings, parks etc. and if people want to smoke, they can do it in their backyard, basement or car and not in someone elses presence.

We all know the effects of it by now, and if people want to light up after sex I say power to them(provided its in their home), but not after they eat at a resturant, or spend $150 on their new TV or coat at the mall.

They have fines against being drunk in public, what makes smoking so special?

I'd love to see a ban happen but the simple (and dirty) truth is that our government makes money off of it. It's unfortunate (or fortunate, depending on how you view it) but that's how it is. I don't think the Canadian government will ban smoking in Canada completely.

most certainly it should, i can already imagine how much money my sister would save up if it was banned and she didnt have to smoke anymore. Then she wouldnt as me every week to lend her 50 bucks... Anyways i strongly advise that it should be banned in the US too, since nothing good ever comes out of smoking anyways....

be real, the goverment get loads of cash from smokers (taxes) they can't afford to lose it. and don't come with issues like healthcare costs will drop, because a smoker that needs to go to the hospital PAYS for his visit. so all you non-smokers should realise smokers pay more taxes then you do, so an alternative is to make those non-smokers pay for the taxes the smokers are paying. if your not prepared to do that, better come with a real good idea how to solve this.

I live in Manitoba, one of the Provinces that has banned smoking in all public places. Well, not exactly true...our Provincial government (like each individual U.S. State has no juridiction to enact laws on 1) Indian Reserves and 2) Federal Buildings. Those two places in Manitoba can still allow smoking if they want. The result has been almost complete restriction in all federal buildings however the reserves have allowed people to smoke anywhere they damn well want to (in order to get the smoker's business in bars, casinos and restaurants).

That being said, I wanted to make a counterpoint to the tax revenue from tobacco being something the government does not want to lose. On the contrary, in a country like Canada with healthcare for everybody, the revenue from tobacco taxes falls extremely short of what is needed to pay for smoking related illnesses. I didn't believe it until various costs were put into line items for hospital visits and treatments...the short way of putting it is that it is tremendously expensive to treat hospital patients, especially long term cancer or heart related smoking ailments that can go on for years and years. Why do you thing the government wants to abolish public smoking and prevent kids from starting, because of the huge cost to our system! I realize that the U.S. is set up differently from Canada, I have relatives and friends in various States, but our medical system is universal and is made available for everyone as equal as humanly possible. To offset some costs, people that have certain vices pay what we call "sin taxes", a disproportionally high percentage of taxes on smokes and booze. An example in retail prices are $22.79 for a 26 oz. bottle of Vodka and $10.00 for one package of cigarettes, both of which are much higher than all of the lower 48, even so called "Taxsachusetts". That's why it makes sense to ween people off the notion that smoking is socially acceptable. I'm not sure what the average age of the folks on this board are, but I'd say it's pretty safe to say that our great grandchildren will look back at smoking as some stupid thing that a few generations did in "the old days". My grandfather, who's passed away, used to talk about the bars not letting women inside and they used to have half a dozen spittoons all around for people to spit it. Times change, and smoking will be a dirty part of history, we're just in the middle of that transition right now.

I'm completly for banning smoking. All it does is tie up our health care system.

I dont know WHY on earth in our modern society where we KNOW for a fact that smoking kills, that people still start this horrible habbit.

You could say the same for obesity. Doensn't stop people from getting fat.l

I think the difference is alcohol makes people more agressive and dangerous (i.e. traffic). so if something happens the results of it will be instant. Smokers on the other hand "damage" they air people breathe so it will be a problem in the long run.

But although i do vote for banning in public places, i find it hard to believe people will damage a third party' longues severly so it created medical problems.

look from it this side, a smoker usually gets problems after 20-30 years of smoking. it's medicly proven that if you stop before those years your longues are able to regain full capacity (don't ask me for a source but it was on the news some while ago) so how could a person standing at the busstop breathing smoke from another person potentialy die ? :/

i'm not making a point here, just want some answers because i don't find it very likely.

definatly...not.

lol yea i know i may be a bit young to smoke, but yes i do. Like you could ban it from "Family" restaurants, and "Family" bars or something, but come on your just selfish if you ban it everywhere. Like some smokers are really rude, they blow there smoke in ur face, well im not :D.. i blow it up! lol hahah

thats my 2 cents.

Here in Ireland we have banned smoking in pubs.

I personally think it is a great thing

What part of Ireland you from? Im from Ireland myself, Waterford. Pretty bad weather eh?

I agree with the No Smoking Ban in Ireland and I think it should be brought in everywhere.

Sadly I don't think it will happen, at least not for a few more generations. There would be riots if they tried banning it for an entire country. They tried banning alcohol in the US once, and look how well that worked out.

584823794[/snapback]

you are most certainly right about that, and not only will there be riots but people also have to realize how much money these companies make and how much saying they have in gov. such as the one right here in the US. These companies are right next to the Arabs and their Oil, compared with the money they make. I think the Gov. will probably ban alcohol again before they even try banning cigs, the market is just too big and there is just way too much profit made in it, even when the tabacco companies are the ones doing some of the advertising against smoking.

I live in Manitoba, ...

Point 1. We should need some statistics here how smokers-taxes weigh vs health care problems caused by smokers. but i made a wild guess. but i see your point.

point 2. It will be something that we look back to as a weird and bad habit. i definatly agree. but people will have to accept it, and for now it's just limiting a persons free will so to say. How would you react if you couldn't eat those cookies you liked so much. its a weird thing.
