GMail Drive shell extension - *New GMailFS*

Question

GMail Drive shell extension 1.0.2 UPDATED

GMail Drive is a Shell Namespace Extension that creates a virtual filesystem around your Google GMail account, allowing you to use GMail as a storage medium.

GMail Drive creates a virtual filesystem on top of your Google GMail account and enables you to save and retrieve files stored on your GMail account directly from inside Windows Explorer. GMail Drive literally adds a new drive to your computer under the My Computer folder, where you can create new folders, copy and drag'n'drop files to.

Ever since Google started to offer users a GMail e-mail account, which includes storage space of a 1000 megabytes, you have had plenty of storage space but not a lot to fill it up with. With GMail Drive you can easily copy files to your GMail account and retrieve them again.

When you create a new file using GMail Drive, it generates an e-mail and posts it to your account.

The e-mail appears in your normal Inbox folder, and the file is attached as an e-mail attachment. GMail Drive periodically checks your mail account (using the GMail search function) to see if new files have arrived and to rebuild the directory structures.

But basically GMail Drive acts as any other hard-drive installed on your computer.

You can copy files to and from the GMail Drive folder simply by using drag'n'drop like you're used to with the normal Explorer folders.

Because the GMail files will clutter up your Inbox folder, you may wish to create a filter in GMail to automatically move the files (prefixed with the GMAILFS letters) to your archived mail folder.

Please note that GMail Drive is still an experimental tool. There's still a number of limitations of the file-system (such as total filename size must be less than 40 characters), and it doesn't make full use of the secure internet protocols available.

Installation Guide

* Extract the ZIP file to a temporary folder.

* Run the Setup application.

Woah - Great :D. But it disconnects everytime you go back to My Computer :(. It still kicks ass though :) - if you can, try make a /send to: Dekstop, blah blah 'Gmail Drive' context thingy - that would kick ass :)

Just make a shortcut of the drive in the Send To folder (located in c:\documents and settings/yourname/send to). Its a hidden folder tho so make sure you have your settings set to show them. Works fine, I just did it.

When I browse for my Gmail Drive to create a shortcut I end up with C:\::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\::{2B3453E4-49DF-11D3-8229-0080BE509050} as the shortcut and it says file not found.... What am i doing wrong

Drag and drop the GMail Drive to your desktop or wherever you want the shortcut

sounds very tempting...

don't really need it though...

wonder what gmail is gonna do though....

I honestly dont think they can do much. All it's doing is sending and email to yourself.. I don't think that's against the rules.

How come all the attachments come out as .bin files? I sent a .txt test message and it is named: part01.bin

The following from [email protected] group should answer your question:

Scott: i've had problems sending files to my account. all i get when sending

attachments via the drive is "part1data001.bin" files. any thoughts?

Triple Seven: Scott, that's how the tool works. The file names are encoded into the

email subject. That's why there's a limit to the length of the

name/path you can have. If you open your GD from My Computer, you'll

the files apear in the right form (IE Folders, Names, etc.)

Derek: you can't open the files in your inbox that you uploaded via gmailfs.

T.M. Tracy: right. the purpose really isn't to be a medium to upload files to

your account. the files you upload are going to be encoded...and it's

not meant for you to go and download the files from your account.

Derek: gmailfs loads the files into your account as .bin files.. you have to

use gmailfs to open your files again.

Derek: gmailfs loads the files into your account as .bin files.. you have to

use gmailfs to open your files again.

Its not encoded as *.bin file , they just rename it,

download them from webaccount & rename back to orignal file name to check!

thats it!

& thats what I did, It didn't give me any errors !!!

    • After enabling it in about:config, customize, density, compact; the toolbar/address bar gets smaller vertically. I enabled Nova, I notice the tab bar/title bar is a bit larger vertically now? Everything always becomes a waste of space.
