sigh, there are lots of threads about this already, but since this is your first post, i'll explain everything. keep in mind, though, that in the future, you should take more responsibility and try to do this yourself.

1. fonts go in the fonts folder. go to the control panel, and open the fonts folder. copy and paste the font in there. done.

2. y'z toolbar is an app that skins the toolbar buttons in explorer and ie. google it and you'll find it. once you do, put the y'z toolbar theme in the appropriate folder and run the exe.

3. icons can be changed by using iconphile: http://www.virtualplastic.net/scrow/iphile.html

or you can reshack shell32.dll (and other files).

4. to use a visual style, you need to replace your uxtheme.dll with a modified one. read the guide here: https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=182900

I assume you are talking about Stefanka's screenshot here.

If you want your desktop to look exactly like that in the screenshot, it takes more than just downloading the Inspirat2 zip file. There are other programs that he is using, but are not included in the file.

As dreamz has said, and you have verified, you'll need the Y'z Toolbar program to get the same Explorer toolbar as shown in the screenshot. And that is only for the Explorer toolbar. If you are talking about the icons in the Start Menu or those in the taskbar, those are not included in the zip file. You'll have to look for them yourself and install them yourself using icon changing programs like IconPackager or IconPhile.

There are a number of substyles contained in the Inspirat2 theme. You can change between them (and therefore change the colour of the buttons in the taskbar or the colour of the taskbar itself) by right-clicking on your desktop, select Properties, go to the Appearance tab, and under Color Scheme choose the one you like. That should answer your question 3.

The screenshot shows what is called a compact Start Menu. I'm pretty sure the Inspirat2 theme comes with compact start menus. Again, selecting a different substyle would change your normal Start Menu to a compact one.

To use the visual style, first, you must replace the UxTheme.dll file. You can use the Neowin UxTheme Multipatcher to do this if you feel uncomfortable replacing it manually (works with fresh installs of Windows XP, as well as with SP1 and SP2 installed). To use, follow this guide:

1. Extract the "UXTheme Multi-Patcher (Neowin Edition) 2.5.1.exe" file to somewhere convenient (for example, the desktop).

2. Reboot into Safe Mode by restarting the computer and pressing the F8 key before the boot screen appears, and using the arrow keys, highlighting the Safe Mode option and pressing Enter. For more information on Safe Mode, search the Windows Help and Support Center for "Safe Mode" (without the quotes)

3. When Windows finishes loading in Safe Mode, locate the auto patcher program and run it. Follow the instructions on the screen.

4. When the program comes to the OS detection screen, ensure that the version information that is being displayed matches your exact Windows XP version. To verify, go to Start, Run, type in "winver" (without the quotes), and compare the information that is being displayed. If you patch the UXTheme.dll file with the wrong version, problems are bound to ensue.

5. When the program asks whether you want to enable the Themes service, choose OK.

6. Restart your computer. You should now be able to apply third party visual styles. For safety reasons, it is recommended that you reapply any visual styles after rebooting.

As for the icons, you can use either Stardock's IconPackager (shareware) or IconPhile (freeware) to change them.

To use the Y'z Toolbar themes, you need to download Y'z Toolbar 1.3. Use Google or your preferred search engine to look for it.

If you use the Mozilla Firefox web browser and wish to use the Firefox themes included, drag-and-drop the JAR files into the Themes window in Firefox (go to Tools, then click on Themes to open the Themes window in Firefox).

here we go!

1. i have no idea where you can download the icons, but that could be a shell32.dll hack, not a y'z toolbar theme.

but it says in the screenshot that the y'z toolbar theme is included, so...go get y'z toolbar, put the y'z toolbar theme in the folder, and run the .exe.

2. go to display properties > appearance > color schemes. you should find some additional subcategories in that dropdown list.

3. press the print screen button (on the top of the keyboard, above insert), then paste into mspaint.

4. where's 4? :p

5. either it worked or it didn't. if you can use a 3rd party visual style, then it worked, and i'm guessing it did (since you implied it above).

It's rather strange. I have in my HDD the Longhorn Inspirat theme when it was released some time back. The current download at Stefanka's Deviantart page contains both the Inspirat and Inspirat2 styles, which you have most probably downloaded. The release in my HDD actually contains the Y'z Toolbar theme that you are after, but Stefanka has removed this theme in the latest release. PM me your email so I can send it to you.

Also, there is no version with a black taskbar in the Inspirat zip file that I downloaded some time back. Perhaps Stefanka removed it. PM him and enquire.

As for the Start Menu, I think what you have now is a compact Start Menu, with the titles of the icons on the right side of the Menu (like My Computer, Search, Run, etc) not showing. Is that correct?

1. hush66 said there's no black one. pm stefanka.

2. just press print screen, and then open up mspaint, then paste it in there (ctrl + v or edit > paste).

3. you want it to be wide (so you see the text)? maybe there's a substyle without a compact menu. otherwise, you can edit the margins in stylebuilder.

You can make a shortcut to YzToolbar and place the shortcut in the startup folder, or if you don't want shortcut in startcut folder but want it to autostart, type regedit in the run dialog and go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

and create new string value called YzToolbar, right click your newly created string value and type the path to YzToolbar (ex. C:\Program Files\YzToolbar\YzToolbar.exe) and the next time you restart Windows, it should autostart for you. :)

You can get it to autostart either way, but the creating shortcut for startup folder in start menu is easier the, though it is up to you on which way you choose. :D

Hope this helped! ;)

Edit: I'm too late, someone beat me to it!

in the start menu.

an easy way to add a shortcut is to go to the taskbar properties again > click "customize" > add > find the application and then put it in the startup folder.

for the start menu icons, try this: https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=85776

    • Looks like MS is officially extending Windows 10 support while stopping just short of officially changing the end date. I teased in the last article that the process for gaining free support was a little invasive, but this is basically just giving it out for free, so I guess I'm taking back those words.
    • Microsoft shares Windows 10 ESU key guide for office PCs that don't support Windows 11 by Sayan Sen Recently, the Indian government issued a caution about the upcoming end of support for Windows 10 which is about four months away. Interestingly, on that very day, Microsoft made a major announcement regarding this as the tech giant debuted free enrollment options wherein support would be extended for another year at no extra cost. Microsoft is also trying to make it easy to set up Extended Security Updates (ESU) with a new tool. You can see in the image below: New ESU enroll wizard Following that, today, the company has shared a new guide on how to activate ESU via Intune in the case of Windows 10 office PCs that are not supported on Windows 11. First up, Microsoft has reminded users of the prerequisites of Windows 10 ESU: The system needs to be on Windows 10 22H2 with KB5046613 (November 2024 Patch Tuesday) or newer. The device needs access to the network endpoints required for client activation. The process that is used for activation needs administrative privileges on the device. The guide contains several PowerShell scripts and are meant for IT admins and system admins. One of those is a validation script "Check-Win10ESUPrereq.ps1" that Microsoft has published to help "verify a device has the required version and patch level for Windows and it can communicate to the required network endpoints." Essentially, it checks if the aforementioned requirements are satisfied and can be used for troubleshooting against those prerequisites. After the "validation," Microsoft says there are two ways to proceed with the ESU key activation. First. it can be done by either Remediation through: Detection Script (Win10ESUActivation-detect.ps1) and Remediation Script (Win10ESUActivation-remediate.ps1). And second, by Win32 Application with Win32 Install Script (Win10ESU-install.ps1) and Win32 Detection Script (Win10ESU-detection.ps1). In the case of Remediations, Microsoft mentions "some licensing considerations" due to which "some smaller companies may not have that option." Finally, Microsoft has also shared some Activation IDs for manual verification via Slmgr VB script for obtaining volume activation information: Win10 ESU Year1: f520e45e-7413-4a34-a497-d2765967d094 Win10 ESU Year2: 1043add5-23b1-4afb-9a0f-64343c8f3f8d Win10 ESU Year3: 83d49986-add3-41d7-ba33-87c7bfb5c0fb You can check the full guide and the details here on Microsoft's official Tech Community website.
    • It blows me away how overpriced Synology is. $600+ for a 3+ year old SATA NAS with only gigabit networking!! Even for 2022 that is pretty low-end hardware. Yes, the Synology software is fantastic, but if we say this hardware is worth $300 max (and that is even giving a generous premium to the fact that it is made by a respected OEM), their software is NOT worth an additional $300, especially considering it is locked to the hardware it shipped on and you have to pay that premium again for your next device. Important correction to the specs table above. Saying Disk Capacity is 72TB and even going further to detail that is 4x18, strongly implies it comes with those disks, which it does not. I would rather see it say "Max Capacity: 72TB (disks not included)."
    • well again if w11 adoption its so high there's no reason why they try to explain us why is "better" to move to w11. If they are so right about their downgraded UI, why they add some of their UI elements back things like never combine and now small icons. Last time i check majority is still on 10 over 11 so yeah millions of users that did not upgrade to w11
    • Size 15. In the first week I managed to get a full week before having to recharge from 10%. I looked online and Samsung recommends recharging it when it gets to 20-30% to preserve the battery life. In the second week, started wearing my Galaxy Watch6 Classic again, because I read that it offsets sensors to the Watch, meaning the battery lasts even longer... and a week on (today) the ring was at 31% when I recharged it fully again, so a difference of over 20% in combination with the Watch. By the way I do not wear my Watch to bed, so it is only the Ring doing the sleep tracking (which is hit or miss tbh) it stops tracking for an hour or two in the night, which is really annoying. I had the same thing with the Watch, and I found it uncomfortable to have on in bed. I have been reading that the battery can start to go bad even after the first week so I am glad it isn't affecting me (yet).
