Laptop or labtop?

Recommended Posts

... that is the question... why is it that so many people refer to laptops as "labtops"? A laptop is a small computer, hence you can put it on your lap. A labtop?... What do you guys think of this?

A simple misspelling?

Other than that, or the possibility that a *laptop* makes an excellent computing tool to carry from class to class -- or lab to lab -- I couldn't say why.

You might notice that Apple computers discourages calling the G4 powerbook a laptop and there is a very good reason for this.

Apple discourages calling the PowerBook G4 titanium a laptop because Apple does not want people to use this computer in thier laps. Because the Powerbook runs so hot and has poor air circulation, the metal bottom conducts the heat down and out. There is concern that people may burn themselves if they put thier powerbook in thier lap.

So what should you call the Powerbook G4? You can call it a notebook computer, portable computer, PowerBook, but not a laptop.

Ya... so there...

You might want to be careful, you may offend people that are reding this message board. Just because something is different does not mean it is "queer" or "gay". can't it just be strange, odd, or stupid?!?! I hate when people make comments like that!!!:(

Well, that is the first time I have heard of "Labtops", possibly of a speech error or spelling error? Anyway, we know what they mean. My (made up) definition of Labtop: A workbench inside a laboratory.

Queer is really another word for weird or abnormal. It does not mean gay. It is used so much nowadays to describe gays that it has become a replacement. He might have meant to use the word as it was originally meant for.

In his post, he could have meant "... for weirdos...." not ".... for gays....".

the gay thing came into the thread by me and my post that was edited by keldyn. i did not tend to spark up a flame war bout people being gay, my "queer" comment came out as this but was meant to be used as an alternative word for weird, odd, etc. sorry for the trouble ladies and gentlemen.

hmm....i think laptop is sometimes called labtop from people because of the way we enunciate our words when we talk to each other (in real life..not online)...the sounding for P is very similar to B and some people just don't really know how to really spell it. As for it being a laptop, it's because the manifacturer or developer calls it a laptop (or they called it that because the pioneer of these devices called it a laptop). I think that if someone made a laptop and called it Cheese, then it'd be called Cheese. Much like how Powerbooks are called Powerbooks. It's the name of the product line.

my 2 cents. hope i was clear with my thoughts. =)
