With quotes like "I?ve never run a comparison between Opera and some other browser myself, I have to admit." its so easy to tell that the site author is such an unbiased and informed person. :rolleyes:s:

I think Operas interface is very userfriendly, also you can layout the browser as you wish.. Firefox is so easy that it's booring.. and the skins.. the HORROR!!

Opera is also free  people seem to forget that after a few minutes each time it's posted..

No I didn't forget about the free version with the ad banner. Don't want an ad banner, people seem to forget about mentionting that when they talk about the free version.

Their ad-banner is made up of Google ads. Guess what, this forum uses Google ads.

If you disable them (the ads on this forum, that is) then it is the same as inviting a random person to dig up the bodies of your ancestors and violate their corpses through the act of sodomy.

Supporting Neowin, Supporting Opera....their both compatible with each other ;)

Oh come on.? Now you're just grasping at straws here.? 3 to 2, oh no!? 7.x was a complete rewrite, which means a lot of bugs to be worked out.? It's really not much different from Being at 1.0.? Maybe you should learn how software development works.

Fact is, Opera decided to call it 7. That indicates, "Final product, so let the comparisons begin." And I do know how software development works, and I can tell you that many developers don't just completely rewrite the software (unless it was extremely messy before). Either way, I'm still not even comparing the early versions of Opera 7 to Firefox. I'm comparing versions from Firefox's pre-release to now. You seem to be the one trying to grasp straws. Firefox beat it in security, even if by one vulnerability.

Chode, I fail to see any connection to sodomizing a dead body and not wanting to see a Google ad in my browser. Besides, this is a website. It has good reason to have Google ads. The ads aren't even intrusive. Can't say the same about Opera.

What version of Opera specifically are those vulnerabilities from? Maybe I missed it, but i don't see anywhere being mentioned on their site which version it was, 7x could be 7.54. And I think they are all already patched in 7.6 preview releases.

You say google ads aren't intrusive here, then how come they become intrusive in Opera? It uses negligible bandwidth, really.

I Prefer Opera...

Tried every version of FX or FF whatever u call it since 0.8

just found myself coming back to opera...

i find it easier to turn off options then to hunt for them and then install them hoping that they work wid the other extensions.

Also for the people complaining that opera is at 7.54 (Stable version) and FF\FX is only at 1.0,

doesnt FF\FX use the mozilla core .. which was out much b4 opera was... so didnt they have more development time...

I mean come on ppl.. opera can change its name and its version to 0.00000001

would it change ur opinion then ?. No you just need a reason to bash opera.

Thank you, at least someone gets it.

jaded: They rewrote it to add better support for CSS2/DOM/HTML4/XHTML. Opera has been around for something like 10 years, and their rendering engine was starting to show it's age with not being able to keep up with the new machines and new standards. 6.x was quite good, but sometimes a complete rewrite is better, even if your previous code is good. They redid the GUI to bring unprecedented customizability, and it was a good move, on both counts. Rewriting code does NOT mean it was messy/bad code.

There are things I like about each.

FF Pros

Free

Open Source

Many useful plugins

FF Cons

Can't use the native windows theme at all

Memory hog (Often uses 100+ megs, its used 300 megs before for me)

Sluggish as hell at times (I'll have it freeze when opening a page for 10-20 seconds quite often)

Can't drag and drop bookmark folders, you have to use the manager

Engine renders pages in annoying ways (Things shift across the page while loading, etc)

Anytime I open more than 15 tabs I'm prone to FF deciding to crash

Opera Pros

Very sleek and refined feel compared to FF

Extensive functionality (Page zooming, PDA preview,

Can use windows native theming!

Resize, minimize and maximize tabs

Good keyboard shortcuts that are also easy to change

After you're used to it, it feels very natural and efficient to use, levels above my FF experience

Opera Cons

$$ or ads

Learning curve is a bit higher imo

Nothing as convenient as adblock for it to my knowledge

wow, i never would have thought that people felt so strongly about browsers.

I like Firefox much better.

I used to use only IE. But after hearing of Opera and Firefox i decided to give them both a shot.

i tried Opera for a week and never really felt comfortable with it. It's a kind of an intangable reason, but the Opera interface didn't do much for me. I uninstalled it and tried Firefox. It's been 3 months since i migrated to Firefox, and i aboslutley love it. The interface, tabs, and entire package were all completley intuitive to me, almost instantly.

I'll probably give Opera another shot sometime. But for now Firefox has become my browser of choice.

I'm going to step through your list of cons for firefox....

1. I think I know what you mean here...firefox doesn't work with some of the skins I've had for windows. Their xul rendering system looks different, but that is a very minor con if the interface doesn't bother you that much. It would be a good feature though...maybe an extention or a modification of some kind....

2. I've had this occur as well. Actually, firefox tends to stay under 100mb by a good margin unless I open a lot of tabs. Minimizing the window fixes it, but less memory usage would be something I'd like to see in future versions.

3. Sluggish? Sorry, I can't back that one with my experiences.

4. What? Maybe I misunderstood. You can drag and drop and organize in that window without using the bookmarks manager. I have encountered this before though, I had to create a new profile to fix it. Some bug that occured when I upgraded I guess.

5. Page display is annoying....Did I mention that you sound biased towards firefox?

6.This last one is due to the fact that it's taking up so much memory (on your system) I've had 15 tabs open plenty of times with no problems.

I've tried opera before, it wasn't for me. Plus I spent a lot of time figuring out how to use firefox--I'd be starting all over with Opera. Firefox works for me, it obviously doesn't work for you.

wow your reasons are so compelling..not! you could have at least explained like many of the other people have been doing.

I prefer Opera, i used opera for ages, and then i tried to switch to Firefox, but just couldn't get used to, Opera and Firefox have their own ways of doing things, and I guess its whatever suits you best.

When i switched to Firefox, there were just tiny tiny things that i missed which made me switch back

The ads aren't intrusive in Neowin. They fit into the design nicely. On the other hand, it's a whole toolbar in Opera.

    • prices are insane its like 140 dollars more expensive, sigh
    • This seems backwards. You should have to explicitly authorize files for outside use. It shouldn't be the default.
    • Wow you are right, I never even noticed this until you said it! (870E Aorus Master) Before testing this card I had a TP-Link tx401 10GbE PCIe card in that slot (now using XikeStor 310 Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter).
    • Lack of 5.1 makes this a no sale. What I really wish creative would make would be a USB version that supports 5.1 analog audio for speakers, can switch to headphone mode, and matches the specs of their top tier cards. The current X870E AMD motherboards dont have a great option for adding a PCIE x1 card without cutting down pcie lanes to the graphics card.
    • The Microsoft Office feature that time forgot by Usama Jawad I have been actively using Microsoft Word for the past couple of decades in academic, professional, and personal capacities. Although I used it through the perpetual version of Office apps at the start, I have been an active subscriber of Microsoft 365 Family subscription for over five years now. This means that my Word installation is regularly updated with new features, some of which I don't really like, but that's beside the point. As new features get continuously added, old ones that used to be a staple of Word have started to take a backseat. While I was reminiscing over my Windows experiences from my childhood today, I suddenly remember one such capability that I heavily used in my younger years but have not really touched in over a decade, and haven't seen in documents created by others either. That feature is WordArt. Just to clarify, WordArt is not a Microsoft product specific to Word, and is included in other Office apps like PowerPoint and Excel too. However, Microsoft Word is the app that I used Word Art in heavily, while making assignments or other deliverables for school. If you're unaware, WordArt offers a collection of styling techniques for text, introducing 3D effects like shadows and reflections in the text. It used to be one of the coolest things ever when I was at school and me and my classmates would often compete to ensure that our assignment's title in WordArt was truly the best and stood out above the rest. See some examples of WordArt, still present in the latest versions of Word below: Although WordArt is undeniably cool, it has taken a bit of a backseat, and has been relegated from the Home tab to the Insert toolbar, along with a bunch of other utilities, making it very easy to miss. This isn't exactly surprising because WordArt doesn't really have a place in academic and professional documents anymore, and while I have seen some creatives using it while developing promo material, even that sector has gravitated more towards dedicated graphic designing tools in the past years. For the vast majority of us, WordArt doesn't really exist, and that's alright. At least, it's still an option that can allow us to reminisce our childhood or even make some quick text stylization, if we really need it. Perhaps its usage has waned over time or the novelty has worn off, but I haven't even seen children use it in their academic assignments anymore. In fact, many don't even know that it exists. Maybe that's the fate of every beloved feature. What once felt cutting edge eventually becomes a relic, quietly tucked away as tastes, trends, and technology move on. WordArt may no longer dominate school assignments or decorate the covers of classroom projects, but for those of us who grew up with it, it remains a colorful reminder of a time when making text glow, bend, and cast giant shadows felt like the height of creativity. Hidden behind a few clicks in modern Word, it still survives not as a productivity tool, but as a small piece of computing nostalgia that refuses to disappear.
