Ok, here is the final answer for those who try to say that Opera:

a) is cluttered

b) has annoying ads

Here is a default installation of Opera 7.6 Preview 4b, set to display Google ads. Take not that the interface is clean (in my opinon, it is TOO clean actually...and normally I add in a lot of new toolbars and buttons). Also notice the ads are not intrusive, and are away from the main web-page area of the browser.

And here is the other option for ads....relevant graphical ads if memory serves me.

For this I used a clean installation of Opera 7.6 Preview 4b. I have not modified anything. All I did was browse to www.neowin.net/forum, scroll down to the bottom. Then print-screened for each ad-type.

The interface has been improved extensively during the 7.6 beta stage, as has the way ads are displayed (I am glad that giant....BLOCK of ads that used to occupy the far right are gone.

Mozilla was the first alternative browser I used. Loved the skin (was the modern silver one at the time) loved the new features and basically liked the fact I wasnt using IE.

This was way before Firefox and way before Mozilla 1.0.

Tried Opera at the same time and just didnt like it.

Few months later I tried out Opera. Mozilla was quite crash happy at the time mainly because I was using nightly builds and found Opera to be my new favorite. Been using it since.

Only tried Firefox once or twice since its release, I'm just so used to Opera now and the way it works that I dont want to bother trying anything else.

If I downloaded and used firefox for the next couple of weeks I'm sure I would get used to it and see no reason to change back but as things stand I use Opera and thats about that. I will use anything though, not going to be some kind of fan or follower just because thats what I choose to use that day...

I think many opera users would back me up on this, when I say it's the little things that keep me using Opera. All the little things you take for granted, and probably couldn't even list all of them. They make the browsing experience easier and better, and you just miss them using anything else.

Sure, firefox tries to emulate a lot of things with extensions and what-not, but it simply cannot capture the magic of opera when you know the ins and outs of it,

Chode, those ads still seem intrusive to me. Especially when I'm on a little 1024x768 screen and want the most of my page open that I can get. Those ads also are distracting. The colors try to be subtle, but look out of place.

1024x768 is considered small  That's what I'm running.

When I'm forced to use an unregistered copy of Opera, there is a little trick to make the ads go away (legal too, not cracking or nothing)....

opera:/button/Leave%20Fullscreen,,,,Enter%20Fullscreen%20%3E%20Enter%20Fullscreen%20&%20View%20main%20bar,6%20&%20Enable%20scroll%20bars%20&%20View%20page%20bar,6

When using Opera, copy the above link into your address bar and hit enter. It will add a button under "my buttons" called Fullscreen, which you can drag anywhere in your interface. It's a custom version of the Fullscreen display which displays the address bar, page bar, scroll bar and main bar. Viola, Opera with near maximum screen real estate.

What the Hell is the point of saying anything at all if your post consists entirely of 'I LIEK OPRA!!!1' or 'FIREOFX 4 ME GUYZ LOL'? This amounts to more or less you saying 'there are people who like <x browser>'. It says absolutely nothing at all WHY there are people who like <x browser> or why <x browser> is better than <y browser> or anything. It's just some anonymous 'me too!' post. Thanks for wasting everybody's time and looking smart while you do it.

open source (this is very important for me)

585075904

Why's that?

i hate how some people talk (not referring to any person in particular) about firefox being open source but they don't actually use or look at the source code. those people shouldn't use that as a reason.

585077016

I know, people use the open source line far too often. Being open source doesn't instantly make something better than a closed source equivalent.

I don't look at the source code, but I like open source because it gives others a chance to look at the code, find mistakes, bugs, security risks etc and have them fixed....or exploited. Double-edged sword. I'd imagine it makes custom and optimized builds much easier as well.

Opera by far.

The reason i converted from FF to Opera, was because FF had so many problems.

For some reason, my back/ forward buttons disappeared. Even after trying the way your supposed to get them back, they still didnt come back. I then downloaded Opera and it was great, alot better than FF.

Even once the new build of FF was out, i still kept with Opera. It has a nice GUI, many skins for it, tonnes of features, and many other useful tools.

Some people may say its bloated, but you can easily turn any of the offending "bloating features" off.

It comes with a build in IRC client, mail client as well and other cool stuff. Plus, with Opera, you dont need to download a hundred plugins to be able to have it with your own settings.

All in all, Opera is the way to go and i dont like FF.

I would like to reiterate a point that is overlooked a lot.

Opera is not bloated.

Yes folks, it's true. Opera is not bloated. They have many many more features than firefox out of the box, with a smaller download size. How? Well written code. Non-bloated code. Just because in previous versions the default interface was a bit cluttered, THAT DOES NOT MAKE IT BLOATED. Bloated has to do more with speed, file size, etc. Ask any professional programmer, and they will tell you that Opera is not bloated. I am a professional programmer, and I have told you. Take my word.

The IRC client and Mail client are plug-ins. They do not slow down opera when not in use. They are less than 100kb in size. This folks, is not bloat.

Cluttered ? Opera ?

I don't think so. This is how my Opera looks.

Flashing a picture of your customised Opera doesn't make it not cluttered.

http://www.opera.com/graphics/docs/screens...3a02eae4f104798

That's a screen shot of the default Opera configuration for 7.50. It's better in 7.60 now, which is awesome, but up until very recently that's what grandma would see when she opened up Opera for the first time, and that's what i would have to remove every time i installed it. It doesn't detract from Opera's usefulness or customisability or stability or speed or feature set or anything, it's just annoying for 'power users' and a really bad idea for people who've been using Internet Explorer for the last x years of their computing lives.

So... you know, you can be a fanatic either way. Opera does have some flaws, cool as it is.

By the way, you people keep ignoring me. I continue to point out that you don't mind using non-free software EXCEPT when it comes to browsers. However, mysteriously, when it comes to Web browsers you're all about the free.

mufdvr3669, i notice that you use Windows. Were you aware that Windows is not free? Why aren't you using Linux? I also hope America's Army is the only FPS you play, because almost all of the rest cost money. And i'll trust that you don't use Photoshop or Word or Nero.

How many times do you install a browser and customize it? once? twice?? That doesn't sound to be a lot many times to me.

Flashing a picture of your customised Opera doesn't make it not cluttered.

Opera is by far the best browser of all time.  God STFU you firefox fanboys, go get an iPod and drink coffee.  You Trend masters **** me off. GOD.

585081495

I can guarantee to you I did not choose Safari or Firefox because I wanted to be "trendy". I looked into the feature set I need, customizability, rendering engine, etc. and found that Safari and Firefox were the two best browsers on the market (for me). Oh, and about drinking coffee and getting an iPod: Now you're just trying to set a stereotype, big time. I do own an iPod, but only because I prefer the iPod to the competition. I tried the iRiver and Creative products, and could not get used to them. And don't even get my started on that Dell DJ :x . And since when was coffee really trendy?

Well, Firefox is FREE.

Can Opera beat that?

Hahahaha!!?:laugh::

FFS!

For the 50th time in this thread,OPERA IS FREE>.

It's just ad-enabled, which I provided a full screen viewing button either on this page or the last one to get around

:angry::

Really...if you want to reply in a thread you really should read back at all the points that have been raised and answered :

For the 50th time in this thread, OPERA IS FREE.

Stop fooling yourself into thinking that Opera is free. Opera annoys people with the ads in an attempt to make them pay to get them off their screens. A full screen "hack" doesn't cut it for most people, including me.

    • They aren't going to want to. Most would just go with the 17 Pro and save money. Why would they want to spend $300 for basically the same thing? It's not worth it if there are hardly any changes from year to year.
    • 24H2 rolled out to the Release Preview Channel in early June 2024, so this coming a bit later in the Experimental Channel (formerly Dev) doesn't really say much more than earlier H2 releases that came out in October. I am not sure what the thinking is here by putting it in Experimental, one would think that the 26H2 stamp means features are locked down and it's now bug tested until October? I don't even pretend to understand Microsoft's strategy for Windows Insider Program though
