[NHL] Season (or lack of) Update

Recommended Posts

Probably as no surprise to many of us, the NHL has canceled the 2005 All-Star game thats played in February.

Also, the NHL has told all 30 arena to book events up through December. Which means if there is anything at all of the '04-'05 season, it won't be before Decemeber.

What a waste.

And a total of 245 NHLers are in Europe playing. And some others playing in the AHL.

man, i was just reading about this today...

really sucks. i'm disappointed in everyone involved. at least try to work something out, don't just sit there and do nothing.

**** all of you. it's not about the money, it's not about players, it's not about the owners. it's about the sport of hockey and the fans who love to watch.

/edit

oh, and they keep referring to the guys who went to europe as "scabs" and "traitors". does the european league really pay that much? if i had to guess they aren't doing it for the money, but just to play competitive hockey.

and whats up with your name KZWings? i think of the kalamazoo wings AHL hockey team when i see that.

You aren't the first to think that ;)

"KZ" is actually my initials. "Wings" for the Detroit Red Wings.

I agree. This is complete BS. They don't even have any talks scheduled and haven't met since Sep.9. At least respect your fans enough to put some effort into getting the thing resolved. How do they expect that to happen when they are not talking for 2 months? Both sides are just being so selfish. I'm in China now and don't get hockey here, but I would still like to at least listen to the games on internet radio

Who are they? The players are NOT on strike so it's no skin off the nose of other NHLers. The only thing the NHL players are doing in europe is putting some other guys (245 of them) out of work. If someone is going to complain it would be the sub-NHL players that were already in Europe (i.e. Corey Hirsch, former goaltender of the Canucks)

Some of them in Europe are making decent coin. Yes, european salaries are less than the players would usually make but they are not unlike the salaries that Bettman would like to see in the NHL.

Thank ya muchly. :)

I had a feeling it had to do with salaries or something similar. But what I don't get is that NHL players are paid comparatively smaller amounts than other sports (i.e. NFL, MLB, etc.) What I would like to know is if the standard for what is considered to be "excessive" salaries for each sport varies depending on the sport or not...

Well, all I know is that officials for the HP/Compaq Center aka "The Shark Tank" have gone ahead and scheduled a bunch of entertainment stuff to take place through January. Since the All-Star game is in February, halfway through the season, I'm going to say there will be no season and quite possibly, no more NHL.

If the two sides were really determined to fix this, they would have and we would be hearing about progress.

Poor Steve Levy is back doing SportsCenter now.

Thank ya muchly. :)

It has to be determined by the particular sport. Part of the problem with the NBA right now (and especially the past few years) is that they are SEVERELY over-spending on players. This past off-season was different in the fact that those players who wanted top-dollar did not get it. They mentioned this during one of the Warrior games last week that NBA franchises are not going to take risks with anybody anymore. If you pay some guy $60mil over 5 years, and he is hurt or plays like crap for even one of those years, you've lost money. But, merchandise, ticket sales, etc. are all handled differently by each sport as well.

NHL simply doesn't make enough revenue to compete with the Big 3 therefore, they can't pay their players what they want (there has to be a mutual agreement, though, as to what is proper salary). In my opinion, this is one of the most disorganized lockouts/strike that I've heard of in professional sports.
