GTA Map Size Comparison

Recommended Posts

Being about halfway done with GTA: San Andreas now, I'm amazed at how huge the game is. Talk is made about how much more vast the map is than the previous games, but I was curious to get a real look at the difference.

When I played GTAIII I was all, "this game is huge!". When I played Vice City I was all, "this game is huge!", and so on and so forth, so I couldn't really see how the map could be so much bigger.

I found three maps (all original maps by Rockstar) and scaled them to compare the sizes.

I only made two assumptions:

- Each map is to scale.

- One traffic lane is the same width in each of the three games.

Here's the result:

Damn. I spent so much time wandering around Liberty City, and to think that the whole of Liberty City could pretty much fit inside Los Santos is just crazy.

Vice City is twice as big as Liberty City but still only about a third of San Andreas. Crazy.

Anyways, just wanted to share.

you probably thought that because vice city was on like two islands and liberty city took place on like three islands, I didnt really play vice city that much, but I noticed vice city seemed smaller because it was just two island things

I think San Andreas feels smaller. I'm not sure why..

When I played the game in Los Santos, I had the same feeling too because it looks like the typical ghetto environment... Small streets, small alleys and small houses with small backyards...

Anyway, thanks for the map comparison, d00d! (Y)

Hrmm well thanks for the comparison, ive finished all the GTA's, SA included, and I was getting the feeling it wasnt as big as it looked, but heres the proof. I guess because I pretty much fly wherever I go in the game now so it seems so short.

Cheers man.

[halfontopic]anyone with idea's on the XBOX release date?[/halfontopic]

that is HUGE. i loved vice city and how insanly giagantic it was. Is this new one like the first one? with three different area's and gangs and the like?

GTA:SA has three full cities...Los Santos (LA), San Fierro (San Fransisco) and Las Venturas (Las Vegas). Yeah, Vegas ain't in California, but a city based on Oakland ain't too exciting.

Los Santos has a number of gangs, and SF has the Triads and some Vietnamese gangs. Don't know about LV, but I imagine it's more mob territory with the casinos and whatnot.

    • One of my PC's is Windows 11 Home Edition... and guess what? it supports Hyper-V Disks and Containers, as well as WSL2... which these desktop tools leverage on an as-needed basis. It does not need to be enabled system-wide; it merely needs to exist. Furthermore, I tried something yesterday with Hermes Desktop and their "installer" actually builds everything from source as part of its installer toolchain! The installer (and updater as it were) both go through a roughly 19-step process to prep the system for the tool to be used -- and connectivity to local/remote models, local/remote agent configs, and other steps are not included as part of this process (those are all user config steps post-install). ALSO, the "bug wasn't confirmed to exist" is the weakest argument against a bug. That's literally every flawed product's knee-jerk reaction! Even politicians, lawmakers, murderers, and other violent criminals start with that defense... "I deny everything I'm accused of." The bug is the (shared) experience. Whether it's truly Claude Code's fault, or user error, or some other software package being the ultimate culprit, is not the point. They are experiencing unpleasant side effects and don't like that.
    • Each generaton has its exciting times and I was fortunate enough to be right there at the beginning of the PC industry.   I don't think any of us at that time realized how large it would become I still remember working on a TRS-80 with a green screen monitor that kept overheating and dying.     Also used some TRS-80 PCs with tape cartridge memory.   They worked but boy were they slow with everything being a very slow sequential read or write.  But heh, they worked though it wasn't long before they were repaced by the HDD.
    • One Drive should be a four letter word. First thing I disable on my computer. If I want to upload something to the cloud, I use a cloud base storage, NOT microsoft. Oh but what about backup. I have done backups since floppy disk eras...it just comes naturally.
    • It does just not OneCloud. 🤷🏻‍♂️
    • Claude Desktop on Linux doesn’t have ram issues. Strange. 🤷🏻‍♂️
