transparency in graphics

does anyone know how to make the background of an image transparent? i have Adobe Photoshop 6.0, and i cannot figure it out, and it's reeeeeaally starting to bother me.

When you create a new image, there is an option to create the background as "transparent". Select that option.

For images that you have already created, change the image to Indexed color:

Go to Image -> Mode -> Indexed Color...

The option menu that pops up will have a check box for "transparency". Check it, and click OK.

Then go to your image, and use the magic wand to select your background, and hit delete. This will make it transparent (it will show as checkered).

then jump to imageready (ctrl+shift+M) and save as GIF or PNG...
