Editing an AVI File

Question

I used Fraps (www.fraps.com) to make a 5 second video of me and my friernd doing something in a game. Currently the file is 300 megs, at full res (10x7 screen) -- I would like to compress and resize this image so that I can host it on a server. How can I go about doing this with ONLY freeware??

Please help me out because I would like to get this done today :)

Yes XVid and Divx do offer higher quality.

If you want to encode your video into Windows Media Video you can also use the freely available Windows Encoder specifically designed to convert an AVI file into an WMV file. It is very powerful but not as user friendly. It can work with any version of Windows whereas 'Movie Maker' is only for WinXP.
