yes that is correct.

can you buy UMD and record stuff on it? or is it only through MS duo?

also don't you guys think they will fix all these problems by US release?

like RR loading times and other small things?

In addition does anybody know if it would be possible to upload other apps to PSP, like for example a calendar, to do, and other ****? i know they are releasing a keyboard eventually? so maybe...???

Thanks for that. The ?argument? about the PSP screen being able to be scratched easily is now completely mute.

Only sony will be able to make UMD discs so yea Memory stick only.  All publishers have to get sony to stomp the discs.

i think there is potential that writable umd will be a consumer product.

That remote has the same connector as the one MiniDisc players have for their remote... and it actually looks just as the ControlSticks that come with MD Players. So I'm guessing that the controller is just for Audio Playback Control, and probably has the same functionality with Video Playback.

eeek, Some bad news for Importers. LikSang are reporting the prices there having to charge.

Because of the huge shortage, it is impossible to know for anyone (including Lik Sang and retailers in Japan) when and how many units Sony will make available in the following weeks. Not all import gamers worldwide will be able to get their unit from the first batch, and those few lucky ones who must and can receive theirs at launch need to get used to launch prices - which is by now US$ 450 to US$ 600.

http://www.lik-sang.com/news.php?artc=3547

Seams the reason is because of the shortage the Hong Kong importers are having to scorce stock from shops and through Jap retailers and thats forcing the prices right up. Silly Prices, bit glad i canceld my order now.

i was hearing alot of stuff about battery life, but I went to Japantoday.com where I saw a link to cnet's latest info on the PSP (more of an article) and it said

"Sony Computer Entertainment President Ken Kutaragi acknowledged in a Japanese press interview last month that those estimates (4-6 hours gameplay) were for playing a simple puzzle or card game with the screen dimmed, speakers turned off and wireless connectivity disabled. Turn on all the bells and whistles and load up a graphically complex racing game, and the battery will drain faster. Nintendo's market-leading Game Boy Advance SP, by contrast, runs for more than 10 hours between charges"

That article is dramatically out of date, hands on impressions of battery life has already been posted on the net. 3 examples are:

MP3 playback - 9-10 hours

UMD video playback - 4-5 hours

Ridge Racers - ~5 hours

These are hands on impressions from retails units available in Hong Kong.

This information comes from "lunlunqq" at the Gaming-Age forums.

OK, some guy i know posted some PSP impressions on a Chinese board. i guess i can translate them briefly.

This guy is in japan now and he got his psp from the auction a few weeks ago. In his post, he basically described his first-day use of the psp.

//Start:

at 8:30, he left home for school with the psp (battery fully recharged during the night before) and listened to mp3 all the way untill he arrived at school at around 9:30. he then checked the battery in the menu: it said "91%. estimated remaining mp3 playback time: 9 hours."

he then watch movie from memory stick for around 40 mins in his class and then checked the battery again: "80%, estimated remaining movie playback time 4 hours". he said he paused the movie and checked the battery several times during that 40 mins (he did that too during the 1h of mp3 playback) and based on his observation, playing movies consuming the battery at least twice as fast as playing mp3.

he then showed off his new psp among his classmates. everyone awed and cam.

he listened to mp3 during his 1-hour home trip again. he watched movie for around 10 mins during that time. after he arrived home, he checked the battery again: 73%.

he said the mp3s sound much better on his psp than on his ipod.

//end

here is the thread where he posted his impression on psp mp3 and movie playback. it's all chinese but at least there are some nice pics. based on his comments, i can see that the age of porn-under-school-desks is coming!

Also, it seems that Ridge Racer lasts longer than expected. Ridge Race has lasted 5 hours in early testing.

Here's some more pictures, the Japanese launch is in full flow:

Some information about the UK launch in March, Sony Europe had a press day on thursday where they demonstrated 9 games that will be available on or around the UK launch, check out the updated first post for links :D I've already chosen 4 launch games :woot: WipEout Pure, Ridge Racer, Hot Shots Golf and Mercury :woot:

One thing I liked about the original wipeouts (and a lot of other games) was the ability to pop the CD out and stick your own music CD in, Xbox took this a massive leap further with games having custom soundtracks. Well now PSP has tagged along with it, Formula One and WipEout will have the ability to have custom soundtracks from music stored on the Memory stick :woot:

Potential UK retail price?

http://shop.gameplay.co.uk/webstore/produc...tation_portable

?179.99

But at the same time they say ?149.99 for the DS:

http://shop.gameplay.co.uk/webstore/produc...tle=nintendo_ds

?20 off each of those sounds about right, ?130 DS ?160 PSP sounds good to me. This bears no relation to the US price obviously because the UK pays well over the odds for stuff like this.

Can I hold you to that?

At those prices it seems a bargain. I mean 16:9 screen, wireless LAN...

    • Why? Does anybody actually want this? The constant need to close all browser sessions and wait for a new version to install, just so that there’s a integrated coupon manager feels like a waste of everyone’s time

    • Microsoft about to radically change how often your Edge browser updates by Paul Hill Microsoft has just announced that starting with Edge 152, it will be moving to a two-week release cycle for faster, smaller updates. This faster release cadence will begin on August 27. This change comes just several months after Microsoft switched Visual Studio Code to weekly updates. The company said that the Extended Stable releases will remain on an eight-week cycle and that no admin changes are needed to experience the faster release cycle on the Stable channel. The new two-week release cycle will enable the faster delivery of security updates and platform improvements, all while reducing the size and complexity of individual updates. Microsoft claims that organizations will benefit from this change as it offers predictable validation cycles. For organizations that prefer a “more deliberate pace”, the Extended Stable channel remains an option. This change will affect Edge Stable releases on Windows, macOS, Linux, and mobile. The Extended Stable channel will continue to be updated every eight weeks, or every fourth Stable release, for example: versions 152, 156, 160, and 164. The Extended Stable could be a good option for organizations that don’t want the latest updates twice a month and don’t want as much hassle constantly updating browsers. In the case of Visual Studio Code, many of the updates being pushed by Microsoft are AI-related. As we all know, Microsoft Edge has a lot of AI features, so we could see Microsoft pushing more AI, thanks to the faster cycles. On the flip side, quicker releases could mean faster security updates, which is beneficial in a world where AI systems are hunting for software exploits. What do you think? Let us know in the comments. For more updates on Edge, be sure to follow Neowin's coverage. In May alone, we reported on Edge offering in-browser pop-ups to assist users with website compatibility issues, that Edge was losing Copilot Mode, and that Microsoft had fixed a plain-text password bug in Edge. • not yet, because at the moment it is not a threat to MS, if and I mean if it did become a threat to MS Office, then it may be a different thing. MS don't like competition
