PSP Defects Reported

Sony are having a hard time,

they are going to be beat in the handheld market by the DS (guaranteed)

and slowly but surely they are being pushed out of the Console Market (xbox eating into thier profits)

the life of the playstation may be brief.

sony should stick to what they are good at

tv's videos etc.etc.

as far as i am conerned Playstation was a phaze (a rather long phaze admitted) but soon it will come to an end when dealing with microsoft and nintendo.

In fact, you're a sheep, following people saying that all products have problems when it's launch.

ABC and a half!

Right... because everyone is always going on about first run manufacturing processes?

Mmmmmm don't think so, logic dictates that first run yields are bed, there is no way to really test mass production apart from doing a run and fixing the problems... that's how manufacturing works.

And for people jumping on the ?This company has crap products? bandwagon.. Do you think that a company that produces only rubbish products could survive in today?s market? Not only that but is one of the strongest factors in that market too? (talking about MS and Sony here).

Ok, first off, I've worked at Best Buy in ther service department. If a customer was returning or exchanging something we always had to look at it before and tell the returns people what we found so they could make the decision to accept the return. In our store we sold usually 2 times as many PS2s as xboxs. The failure rate for the PS2 was 10 times as high as the xbox. Sony computers were always comming back to get fixed. We even sold more e-machines than sony and we still saw more sony's comming back. Back in home video, we always we seeing sony stuff come back to get exchanged or fixed. Fact of the matter is from what I have seen in my own home and what I have seen working, Sony makes some nice looking stuff and when it works, it's great. But thats just it, it has a really high failure rate. I'm not a DS fanboy or anything, the only Nintendo product I own are a couple of SPs.

As for the twisting, dunno why they are twisting it. Maybe showing that it's very easy to move. In which case, sony should of put better support inside to keep people from twisting it easy. If people are just being stupid and twisting it and saying DEFECT then I don't blame sony.

Hey, if I still worked at Best Buy, I'd get you the statistics to back up what I'm saying. Our dept. always kept track of what was comming back.

I?m not saying that Sony makes rock solid products (Hell I know that the RMA on Sony products is a lot higher than say Panasonic) but what I am talking about is first runs? It?s impossible to get right, there is just know way of knowing if you get a good yield. I guess what I am saying is that maybe some companies QC could be better than they are? (that includes most manufacturing full stop).

So now, companies can hide behind the "It's the first run" sheme as an excuse for bad quality product.

Everyone is asking why you'd twist a PSP. This is supposed to me a mobile product, right? Let's say you have your PSP in a backpack or pocket and it gets twisted a little for whatever reason. Out pops the cartridge and now you really have a possibility of ripping out the whole mechanism.

As far as the first batch thing, companies have extensive testing laboratories. If the mass public starts accepting shody workmanship because it's "first run", then we might as well be their testing lab and get paid for it. Release a beta or something. Let people know it's not the best you can do. Unfortunately, the reality is that the accountants jump in and want to start making a resturn on their research dollar and (thanks to people like the ones posting here) there is no backlash to releasing a bad product because, hey, it''s "first run".

no sure where this came from... i thought of it more like the other way around, sony vs. nintendo but that's just my thoughts from way back (with microsoft pushing out xbox next so quick, but that's another conversation). perhaps the playstation is a "phase" so-to-speak but i really (really) doubt it (as so much that i'd like to believe it though -- all hail nintendo --).

as far as sony's products go: this psp problem thing is getting a bit out of hand. new products undeniably get first released with in-your-face defects so you can't really hold sony to it because it's just a universal thing. My sister had purchased a sony vaio laptop years ago for college and soon gave it to me after graduating since she needed a new one. well this vaio see... over the course of a few more months of use, the LCD had decided to only work at a specific angle (down to the single degree) when opened. the connections going from the body of the laptop to the screen were obviously faulty and possibly worn and I'd have to tilt the screen for a good ten minutes before the thing actually displayed an image. problem due to being of age or problem because it has "sony" branded on it? could be the former, latter, or both... really not sure

my 2 cents

working for someone who manufactures electronics equipment, first runs always have issues...

the people who are bashing sony have still yet to provide any type of evidence for those claims.

Well the video is a good evidence. Enough so thatweb site are using it as a proof of allegations. :)

ABC and a half!

i have to say this to defend some people and hopefully make some people understand.

If someone states something obvious, such as how they are dissatisfied with the fact that Sony's initial batch has some defects, IT DOESN'T MEAN HE/SHE IS A NINTENDO FAN OR SONY HATER!

Holy Crap! What's wrong with people?!

Of course products have problems, but they are being mentioned, AND other products don't usually have a long list such as the PSP's defects.

They'll be fixed for sure, point is, Sony should've put a bit more consideration, and it worries me that the next batch of 500,000 will have the same problems.

Well, you should've read the unofficial Neowin rule.

Those who supports IE = IE TROLLS

Those who supports Firefox = FX FANBOYS

Those who supports MS = MS ZEALOTS

Those who supports Apple = APPLE FANBOYS

The same applies to every brand that are often mentioned/discussed on Neowin.

:p

meh, ill start worrying when the next shipment rolls out with the same exact defects. You at least have to give them one pass to work out the rookie jitters. Dont overreact people, you have to keep in mind Sony has never produced a product anywhere near this. You must give them at least one chance.

and heres another fact: sony is making a loss per unit from the psp from hte competitive price its released with to go against the nds.

585099966[/snapback]

I don't know if Microsoft is still making a loss on the Xbox (but I would think they are), but they made a huge loss on every Xbox when they first released it. As time passed, they found ways to make their loss shrink by eventually finding parts that worked as well but cost less.

I've heard of alot of PS2s dying, didn't Sony get sued over that? Or is that someone else who got sued over their consoles breaking? Anyway Sony has a track record of making mediocre console systems, thats the way it is, I don't think anyone would want to waste their breath trying to argue the processing power of the PS2 vs other consoles, well maybe the Gamecube, but even there you'd almost be cut short by the logic and numbers. But then PS2 is supposed to be at odds with Gamecube or a bit better? Or is it a bit worse? Hard to say.

Anyway the whole twisting thing, I still thing thats rubbish, the whole "what if you put it in a back pack" thing, well in a backpack the twist like that wouldn't happen, you'd have to have something holding onto one side and another thing on the other, I tell you tha'd be some bad packing if you managed to TWIST a PSP like they show in that video and end up making a UMD pop out.

let me just ask everyone that is saying that you wouldnt normally twist the console so it dosnt matter anyway... do you know of any other console that you can twist slightly that causes stuff to come flying out of it ... no? well then it is a really major defect then.

This isnt a big deal, its to be expected.

Dont expect every psp owner to get a "golden sample"...

Sony will fix these problems by their 4th-6th shipments, and personally im glad that I did not pre order from japan.

Nothing is perfect, heck, in one month we might start hearing reports about how many ds units start breaking.

Sony's been know for very high quality products.... which is why people still buy them at such high price.... my last TV was a Sony Trinitron, it last us 13 frigin years!!

When they start exploiting quality image and budge to save money and rush the PSP and try to gain some market share over Nintendo's monopoly, they're bound to make some mistakes.... unfortunately these mistakes will cost them... A LOT.... which will slow them down significantly in the war against NDS... the image of the PSP is definately gonna be damaged.... because of propaganda like this... it's a war.... but they will definately fix these problems.. no doubt..

as for purposely twisting it and watching the UMD pop out.... i think it's Sony's fault, simply twisting something happens a lot... it's why the HOLD function was created on portable music players..... it could have poped out, and hit someone in the eye!!! if it's not their fault, they wouldn't fix it... they'll just keep saying it's the user's fault so being so stupid? NO, when u make a product, u better make damn sure it don't do crap like that.... u gota assume the people who use the end user is retarded and doesn't know anything... the same applies for software, and mathematical proofs

it really depends on how many ppl it affects though.... if it's a small %, and sony offers them a new (revised) PSP, then all might be good.. but if it's widespread... it'll definately have a big impact.... who's gonna buy the same version PSPs in the next batch knowing that it's underdeveloped?

To be fair, look at how much force the person applies to the PSP in the video. A backpack surely wouldn't be able to do that. The other defects are real defects, but if you try hard to twist your PSP for 5 seconds, you kinda deserve to have the UMD disc fly out.

Alright lets twist the DS (the top part of the unit and bottom part of the unit) lets see if it breaks into 2 pieces. Of course it will. If I take the top of the Gamecube and push the lid open with force, it will break off. God, who in there right mind would fricken twist there $200+ product? All of my Sony products that I have has never had 1 single problem with them. It all depends on how well you take care of them. So all this **** about Sony being a bad company is bull****.

    • Anthropic pulls Fable 5 and Mythos 5 after US export control order by Pradeep Viswanathan In April this year, Anthropic launched the Claude Mythos Preview frontier model with state-of-the-art cyber and coding capabilities for a select set of companies around the world. After preparing appropriate guardrails, early this week, Anthropic launched Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, its most capable AI models. Claude Fable 5 is for general users and comes with strict safeguards, while Mythos 5 is designed with fewer safeguards for cybersecurity and biology use cases. Today, Anthropic abruptly suspended access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI models for all customers after receiving an export control directive from the US government. The company received the directive from the government today at 5:21 p.m. ET, and the received letter did not provide any details regarding the national security concern. Anthropic understands that the government became aware of a method to bypass, or “jailbreak,” Fable 5, which might be the reason behind the directive. The order was issued under national security authorities and requires the company to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether they are inside or outside the United States. The restriction also applies to foreign national employees working at Anthropic. As a result, the company has disabled both models for all customers to ensure compliance. Access to previous Anthropic models like Opus and Sonnet is not affected by this government order. The company highlighted that it had developed strong safeguards to reduce the possibility that Fable is misused for tasks related to cybersecurity. In fact, many developers are complaining that the safeguards are going overboard. Additionally, the company worked with the US government, the UK AISI, multiple private third-party organizations, and internal teams to red-team Fable’s safeguards for thousands of hours. Finally, Anthropic noted that no testers have yet been able to find a universal jailbreak on Fable 5. As expected, Anthropic disagrees that a narrow potential jailbreak should lead to the recall of a commercial model used by hundreds of millions of people. It warned that applying this standard across the AI industry could effectively halt new frontier model deployments. Anthropic concluded by mentioning that it is working to restore access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 as soon as possible and plans to share more details within the next 24 hours.

    • Not sure what country you’re in but in many countries you can absolutely jail the sellers behind businesses… in fact I’d say in most countries you can do that
