Hiya all,

I spoke to a rep yesturday and I asked about the upgrades and she said it would be end of Feb.

Just a little FYI.

Yeah good news,

I phoned them up also, and he said if I didn't notice a change by end of march, then give him a ring.

He also said it was automatic, and didn't know anything about an admin charge to change over. He said it's free.

Looks like they will be actually changes the packages, rather than setting up some new capped-but-faster ones.

(They claim to capped at the moment, but don't enforce it. So I suspect they will probably be as lenient with the upgrades. They have enough to worry about, let alone a few leechers going over their limit)

Hmmm that gonna suck... they should reduce the prices altogether! make 1.5mb to cost about ?20 a month and increase upload rate. And 40GB thing will be used up in 1-2 weeks for me as I do alot of stuff like updating my site and my friends. No warez thou

Bad news: - NTL are making serious cutbacks, they're skint. Aparently they aren't upgrading any hubs, so if any speed upgrades do go ahead it's just going to completely choke the system.

I'm considering ditching NTL, the service just doesn't reflect the price.

Ah that sucks, im fine with the current speed but faster upload speed would have been nice :) lets hope we can get a speed upgrade soon.

Im also from hudds nice to see some one from the same town on hear :)

Does anyone have an validity on this announcement?

It contradicts the earlier discussion on caps from the link I posted earlier...

ntl to unleash new 'super speed' Broadband services in mid-March

In mid-March we will be upgrading all our Broadband services for no extra cost! All new customers will go onto one of these new speeds. Once they have launched, the old speeds will not be available to new customers:

300K will become 1Mb, for ?17.99 per month, with a 3GB per month usage download limit (100K upload speed)

750K will become 2Mb, for ?24.99 per month, with a 1GB per day usage download limit (200K upload speed)

1.5Mb will become 3Mb, for ?37.99 per month, with a 1GB per day usage download limit (300K upload speed)

EXISTING CUSTOMERS: It has been decided that there will no longer be a ?25 admin fee for customers to upgrade to the new speeds:

750K and 1.5Mb customers will be upgraded to the new speeds automatically, except for 750K Pace STB customers. 750K Pace STB customers can upgrade by calling Customer Services to arrange their Pace box to be swapped to a Samsung STB or a Cable Modem.

300K customers will not be upgraded automatically, as some customers may not wish to have the higher speed service with a lower monthly usage limit. However, they can still upgrade for free by calling Customer Services.

DOWNLOAD USAGE LIMIT: We will not be checking usage allowances until later this year. We will get in touch with customers directly who exceed their usage allowance and offer them information and alternative options (tbc)

MARKETING: The new speeds will be marketed to new customers as soon as they launch in mid-March. There will be no active marketing to 300K or 750K Pace STB customers, however those who call about the new speeds will be upgraded by Customer Services.

Cable Forum can exclusively reveal, by way of a reliable source, that the speed increases debated about so much over the last few months are about to go ahead from the 14th March, 2005.

Update: ntl now appear to have changed their tune from the earlier reports with regard to the admin charge. The following now appears to be true.

    * Speed increase from 750Kbps to 2Mbps?Free

    * Speed increase from 1.5Mbps to 3Mbps?Free

    * Speed increase from 300Kbps to 1Mbps?Free, see Below

Existing 300Kbps customers will be given the option to upgrade to the 1Mbps. But, on doing so the monthly data transfer cap will reduced from 30GB to 3GB! Some customers may therefore prefer staying on the 300Kbps service with a 30GB monthly usage allowance.

SOURCE.

40GB cap should be ok for the meantime, i'm sure they are just starting it off at a minimum to see how it goes and then the monthly cap will increase. Although the 3GB monthly cap for a 1mb connection is a joke, i'm glad i'll be on the 3mb.

I currently have 300kbps with NTL

Will they let me know when they have upgraded me?

When should it be?

Will there be a charge?

And what is a cap please? How much will 3GB allow me to do?

Thanks

I had no idea any upgrades were gonna happen until i searched on google to upgrade my speed!

What luck (I hope!) ;)

The cap is a download cap and possibly a soft cap (not being enforced heavily).

In limits the bandwidth you can use. Everytime you access a webpage - you download the page with bandwidth. So yes, webpages will cause your bandwidth to be used and you to reach the cap easier.

    • This makes me think of Dune for some reason.
    • I'm too old to return to the "good old days" when I was installing custom ROMs and tinkering with my devices - now I just want to turn it on and use it. I've read that banking and payment apps work on Murena /e/OS (I'll have to check the ones I use) and I also really want to support Fairphone 😉
