Hackers Tune into Windows Media Player

Security researchers have detected the appearance of two new Trojans, Trj/WmvDownloader.A and Trj/WmvDownloader.B, in video files circulating on peer-to-peer networks.

According to Panda Software, both Trojans take advantage of the new Windows anti-piracy technology to trick users into downloading spyware and adware applications.

"When a user tries to play a protected Windows media file, this technology demands a valid license. If the license is not stored on the computer, the application will look for it on the Internet, so that the user can acquire it directly or buy it," Panda Software explained.

An unsuspecting user attempting to download the DRM (digital rights management) license will instead be redirected to a Web site that loads a large number of adware, spyware, modem dialers and other viruses, the company said in an advisory.

Can I have them then?

For some reason I think this is old even through it might have just be reported.

^^for the first time I disagree with you dude, wmp10 is fine, no problems faster at least here is ones eternal application without doubt, although I also have winamp for .ogg etc :p

These files have been floating around P2P networks for quite a long time. That's why I never download wmv videos from any P2P app.

(and before you go OT and start thinking illegal, there are plenty of legal videos on P2P)

The ones you are thinking of use the feature of Windows Media files that allows them to open a web page (usually one related to the file, such as the pr0n site the file came from). The ones being discussed here make use of the DRM feature. Similar effect, but different mechanism.

Exaclty, why do morons still use P2P and then get ****** off then their computer doesn't work? There is a simple answer to the problem, be careful what you download and from where.

Sadly, this is what happens when MS tries to make things work smoothly. Tow possible fixes;

1. User onus - the address they'll be going to is clearly displayed, and the user has to make a judgement

2. MS-approved certificates, to define whether a file can by itself direct a user to a licence page.

Or a mixture of both - like those SP2 'this program is not signed blah blah' boxes.
