Windows Desktop Search 3.01 for Windows XP (KB917013)

Windows Desktop Search (WDS) 3.01 is a minor update to Windows Desktop Search 3.0 that adds: support for indexing UNC files, additional support for enterprise deployment, and stability improvements. WDS 3.01 installs on Windows XP and Window Server 2003, but is not needed for Windows Vista since the WDS component is already included in Vista. Windows Desktop Search 3.01 helps you to find, preview, and use your documents, e-mail, music, photos, and other items. The search engine in Windows Desktop Search 3.01 is a Windows service that is also used by applications such as Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 and OneNote 2007 to index application content and deliver instant results when searching within that application.

If you choose to install and use Windows Desktop Search, you can search for e-mail, documents and other files located on your computer. No information about the files on your computer will be sent to Microsoft as part of this process. Instead, Windows Desktop Search will index the content of your computer and store the index file on your computer. You can customize Windows Desktop Search to index only specified folders on your computer. Windows Desktop search will not store copies of e-mail or documents after they are deleted.

Note WDS 3.01 can be installed as a new install or as an upgrade from 02.05.xxxx, 02.06.xxxx or 03.00.0000. On an upgrade from 03.00.0000, you will not need to rebuild your index.

This download package can be installed via update.exe or MSI. Both of these include the ADM File and Add-in for Files on Microsoft Networks.

After you install these items, you may have to restart your computer.

Hi All,

Here is the current list of Widows XP Pre-SP3 hotfixes which are available from MS, but only if you ask for them:

<snip>

Superseeded by KB873392:
KB885843 - No results are returned when you search for files or for folders over a slow network link in Windows Server 2003 or in Windows XP

If anyone has any of these hotfixes please consider sharing them so we can add them to Autopatcher.

Kind Regards

Simon

Figured I'd contribute:

I just picked a random host, since the file is too big to attach. Probably violates their TOS. Any better places to post?

well, i was testing the new updates from this week and i've realize that now KB892130 and KB905474 are mandatory. not just one, but booth. KB892130 is now at version 1.7.0036.0 and KB905474 is at version 1.7.0018.5. by the way: this was the first time that i saw KB923789 be installed fine

KB936357 - "This is a reliability update. Install this microcode update to improve the reliability of systems with Intel processors."

This update includes a new Update.sys file so it replaces the old KB885626 update, which come out right after Service Pack 2 was released to fix some installation problems of SP2 with Celeron D Processors.

Windows2000-KB917422-x86-ENU.EXE update can be removed. i think its probably included in the recent cumulative update for IE (KB933566).

No. The files in this update have nothing to do with the latest cumulative IE update. The update that replaced this one is the KB935839.

Software Update for Web Folders (KB907306)

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...splaylang=en%20

Overview

This download enables you to update the Web Folders component in Microsoft Windows operating systems, and provides additional functionality.

The article describes the Software Update for Web Folders that is dated March 15, 2007. This update fixes various issues that occur when you use Web folders from your client computer to connect to a server that supports Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV). Additionally, this update includes security enhancements to Web folders.

Supported Operating Systems

Windows 2000; Windows Server 2003; Windows Vista; Windows XP

Side Note: This update is a must have for anyone connecting (or tried to connect) through WebDAV in Windows Vista. I am finally able to connect, but it is still not perfect (like it was under Windows XP).

parkd1, that link says that to try solve that, you need:

- kb927891 (already included in core release);

- windows update v3 (already included in core release and, if i'm not mistaken, with critical turned on, despide it be at WINDOWS_COMPONENTS_PARENT )

but that thing about microsoft update really can be a boring thing...

KB907306: this update is listed since some time ago, but thanks ms, only english version have v2. all other languages are still at v1, that is included in ap since some time ago

Version 2 fixes issues experienced in Vista. This should be included in the core. At the very least the English version.

Three more updates/add-ons missing from Windows Vista:

    • Since they open sourced the calculator in Win 10/11 it is much better and can do a lot, I love it.
    • That's just silly imo. The lengths that man goes to just to avoid W11 is just nuts. Very, very few home users would do that. I will say this though, he is committed. Btw, I note on askwoody that Woody Leonhard passed away March, 2025 aged 73. His site was one of my favorites back in the day. Belated yes but RIP Woody.
    • Because of the EU (a good thing) newer android devices been getting 5 years worth of security patches. Except some Motorola which found the loop hole, and offer ZERO updates. In addition, Google for years have been making where it can patch some stuff by updating the core Google Play Store itself.  As echoed earlier,  you take the security risk in to your own hand beyond supported.
