Honestly, for someone who "sometimes reads news online" Linux is a fantastic OS. If they just use their computer as a web browser, then they will not have any issues with Linux. I'd personally suggest Kubuntu over Ubuntu just because it has a more formular interface for a Windows user, but both are great options for a not very technical user.
In my opinion, Linux is fantastic for an ultra-basic user who just needs a browser and the ability to open documents emailed to them.
Linux is also great for ultra-techie users who enjoy tinkering and problem solving.
Where Linux is weak is more advanced Windows users who are doing more than the basics, but don't have the time or knowledge to get deep into Linux and figure out how to do those same things without mainstream support.
But a human composed and chose the shot and took the picture. That's how the law sees it.
Fortunately, this is the copyright office's determination based on judges' rulings, so that's a win for we human beings...for now.
