[Review] iRiver H340

Recommended Posts

Recently bought my iRiver H340 (UK Version). I know Vice King has done a nice review on his H320 but i have decided to do a short review on my H340. I hope to answer your questions in this review:

Differences; H320 Lite, H320 & H340:

H320 Lite: Its just like the rest of the H3XX series but a "stripped" down version. Meaning you do not get the extra accessories with it.

H320: This is the 20GB version, just like the H320 Lite, but this comes fully packaged with the extras*

H340: This is the biggest HDD iRiver have to offer, 40GB. It has the same functions etc as the H320 and the same extras, but it comes with a docking station, unlike the other two.

*Extras:

Dock (40GB Model)

Case

External Battery Pack

External Microphone

- FM tuner

- Voice Recorder

- External HDD Function

- Firmware Upgradeable

- 16 hour battery life

- 262,000 2" Color Display

- JPG & BMPackaging:/b>

The iRiver H340 comes in a solid blue and black box. Its simple, nothing over the top. Has all the information needed on the box. Couldn?t really ask for more. In the box the first thing you see is the iRiver in a plastic case with all the other goodies tucked away under the iRiver. All the accessories are stored in a little compartment, separate from the iRiver. It comes with all the needed manuals, and I would recommend you to read them. One installation cd is provided. All accessories are wrapped in plastic bags, once again, plain and simple.

Overall the packaging is well done, everything is easy to find and store back in.

Just like the iPod Photo, you are able to view photos on this. But the amazing thing is, that it comes with a camera usb wire, meaning you can upload pictures directly from your camera to your iRiver without using any computers. This is a great plus for people on the go or have friends with pictures on their camera. The 260K colour is a great thing to have, where as the iPod Photo only has 65k. A downside is that a typical 1-2mb picture can take 10-15 to load. For me this doesn?t bother me, but I can see some people being annoyed by this. Overall, a nice feature to have.

4Around The iRiver:iRiver:

Around the edges of the iRiver we come across some little inputs. Such as; DC adapter, usb1.1 for the camera, usb2 to connect to your pc or mac, headphone/controller jack, line in and line out. We also have the hold button, which most mp3 players have and an internal mic, which also produces great quality sound.

5Firmware Upgrade:pgrade:

I am currently using the latest firmware update, 1.27. Originally the iRiver was not able to play videos but now it does. With the last two firmware (1.25, which had some battery issues and the 1.27 which has corrected this) you are able to watch videos. It currently plays AVI files, but thats not a problem as many people have created a converter just for this, and it does the job. I have but all different types of videos on, ranging from live music shows, cartoons and normally films. I can see this is really meant for cartoons as the images can be a bit choppy, but its actually not that bad. Watching normal movies is great and the quality is better then most people would expect. We also are introduced to a nicer interface and a browser option like "Windows Explorer".

If you are looking at an mp3 that can play a range of song formats, movies, listen to radio, record from the radio, microphone and look at pictures, then this is for you. Its alot cheaper than the iPod Photo, which does less stuff and is not half as good. At the moment the only competition it is facing is the iAudio, but this is holding strong. At the moment, this is the iPod Killer.

agree, pictures dont do it justice. Thats why i recommend you to go to a shop and try it out for yourself. It is on the chunky side, but i have not gone with style, i have gone with something which is simply great, and comes loaded with excellent features.

Superb review. I would completely look into getting one but I think that the H3XX's are ugly as hell. Other then that I think it is a superb player and very worth the money.

i thought it was ugly from all the pictures, even my pictures dont do it justice. You actually got to have it to appreciate it. i agree with joseph0324, the design is actually pretty good, from pictures you are not able to get the feel of it. Before buying a new mp3 player, i encourage everyone to check this out.

I agree.

I went to iRiver showroom at airport in Korea, where you can try any iRiver product all you want, and I was absolutely stunned.

I was impressed with their PMP as well.

Oh well... I guess I got a broken one then. It's fully charged now and the screen just stays gray.

I forgot to say you wrote a good review. :p .

    • Waymo recalls self-driving software after cars enter closed freeway work zones by Paul Hill Waymo, the self-driving car maker owned by Alphabet – the parent company of Google –, has recalled some of its fifth-generation Automated Driving Systems (ADS). It did so after some of its cars drove through closed construction zones. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the affected vehicles were capable of driving through a closed freeway construction zone and continuing to drive at speed. The listing on the NHTSA website says that Waymo is currently developing a solution to fix this issue, but in the meantime, freeway driving is being restricted. Waymo will update its ADS software so that vehicles can detect when they can avoid entering construction zones. According to the Safety Recall Report, on April 20, 2026, Waymo’s Field Safety Committee began meetings reviewing an event from April 11, 2026, and five events from April 19, 2026, where Waymo’s autonomous vehicles didn’t recognize and drove past ramp closure signs into the pre-planned freeway construction zones. This took place in Phoenix, Arizona. Separately, on May 18, 2026, seven Waymo vehicles entered freeway lanes with active construction in the San Francisco Bay Area by driving between cones that were placed to show the lane was closed. On the back of both of these events, Waymo restricted freeway driving until it could address the issue. In June, Waymo’s Safety Board reviewed the issue and additional information related to ADS performances around construction zones; then, as a result, it decided to conduct a recall. This development is not good for Waymo as it adds to a growing list of technical hiccups its cars have experienced. Ultimately, it will lead to more scrutiny from lawmakers around the world who will be more cautious about letting autonomous vehicles on their roads without tighter regulation. For readers in areas where Waymo operates, does this news make you more wary about stepping into one of these vehicles?
