It's too bad that FF IS based on and uses the same code as Mozilla, whether you like it or not.? In fact, there is very little difference between Firefox and Mozilla aside from the build options and deployement.? Yes, the UI is different, but it uses the same technology to display it (XUL).? As well, it uses the same rendering engine, the same extension architecture, etcetera.

The Gecko rendering engine in Firefox is greatly modified from what it used to be. Yes, XUL is still being used, but it was recoded to fit the leaner and faster style of Firefox.

As well, the extension architecture was modified to be more integrated with Firefox.

Have anything to back this up?

Last time I checked, you could install most (if not all) mozilla XPI extensions in firefox.

I just tried to install a bunch of FF extensions in mozilla and vice versa, and haven't run across a single one that doesn't work in the other.

Of course it is "greatly modified". It is not like Gecko development has halted. But it is still the same engine! Just because a program gets bugfixes and new features doesn't mean that it isn't based on older versions of the same program. Opera 8 is greatly modified from what it used to be in Opera 7. Does that mean that Opera 8 is a totally new program?

Firefox 1.1 will use the same version of Gecko as Mozilla 1.8, as far as I know. So yes, Firefox is based on technology which is several years old.

Um...not any fanboy thingy, but really, after tweaking FF a bit, i was able to make it a tad faster than IE and a whole lot faster than Opera on dial up.

then you didnt tweak opera correctly. try the latest preview release and set it up correctly. it IS faster.
