Text Font&Color Use

Recommended Posts

I tried search but couldn't figure out what keywords to use, so I just decided to make a thread.

When making a post, can we use whatever text size, color or fonts we want?

Most members leave the setting as it is, but I found certain members who always use specific fonts and colors to make their posts standout and get attention.

How far are we allowed in terms of customization?

And one more question.

I saw many sigs that are made of 2 or more images or texts that end up getting actually bigger than the restriction.

Are we allowed to do that?

Regarding question #2, just in case I didn't make myself clear enough, here's an example.

example1.png

This sig is ridiculously large, yet it doesn't seem to violate the rule because there's no image.

There are many similar cases, and I wanted to know if it's allowed.

I'd just like to say that, regardless of the rules on text colour/size, if someone constantly uses different font sizes/faces/colours, they won't make many friends. :p I find it annoying when people change the font size or colour unless there's a good reason (e.g. highlight something).

Just my opinion anyway. :)

Having posts in various different colours makes it harder to read, and follow the gist of the thread.

There was a thread a while ago in S&FI asking for font / colour change to be added to users profiles, so a user could set them permanently rather than on a per post basis.

This wasnt implemented for the reason that it makes threads harder to read.

If you have good reason to change the colour of font in a post then by all means do so. Otherwise leave it be. :)

And with regards to question 2. If you feel a sig or post violates a neowin rule then hit the report button for that particular poster.

Sigs are not supposed to exceed the size restrictions regardless of WHAT is occupying the space.

If you see a sig like that (or anything over the sig limits), let a Super Moderator know so they can take the required action.

Who's sig is that, anyways?

Forgive me, Mr.mod, I forgot his name.

I'll report them from now on.

Well, I haven't seen many people that constantly change the font size/colour.. I think that they will find it annoying too, after a few dozen posts.. :|

Well, there's one member who I notice the most, and I'm sure there are some others.

It doesn't bother me, but I'm curious why they're doing that.

It has to be annoying to manually change the font and size and stuff with every single post that you make, that is one reason why I don't do that. :) I want my posts to be as easy to read as possible, not to the point where the mods have to warn me and ban me for every 3rd post that I make. :p

You'd be surprised. There was an old member here who was banned a while ago by the name of MxxCon. Many on Neowin probably still remember him. He would constantly make all his posts in Courier. While it does appear on the drop down menu as an available font, can you imagine how much pain it would cause to the eyes to read a long post like that?

Just look for old posts by him. You'll see what I mean.

Different fonts, font sizes, and colors are intended to be used to emphasize a portion of text or make it stand out among the surrounding text. Sure you can make a whole post in a different font/size/color, but you are then defeating the purpose of it. You will see that Neowin staff tend to use different fonts, font sizes, and colors mainly for emphasis of something or to show similarities between several things (by "grouping" them using the same font/size/color formatting).

There are already 2 members I can think of, who do the same thing. :p

It doesn't distract me, but they seem to think that their post should get more attentions than other's.

    • Microsoft is busy. Lots of changes to be released imminently for Windows server or soon. Also, lots happening for next version as well. Third party virus scanning software is being moved out of Kernel mode to avoid repeat of Crowdstrike incident. Windows Protected Mode and Windows Ready Print no longer require third party print drivers to be installed. New storage stack being developed. New NVME drivers now available for Windows Server 2025 to improve local NVME drive performance by 60+ percent. NVME-Of of fabric being worked on for next release to improve network access to NVME drives. ReFs (next file system) now has ability to boot and will become default file system in next release of Windows Server. ReFs improves on NTFS in several areas including resiliency and reliability and scalability. New update stack is being worked on to unify Windows updates, and updates for drivers and first party/3rd party application software. A stricter and more robust third-party driver certification program (ODI) is being worked on to improve performance, thermals, battery life, and reliability on modern Windows hardware by tightening how OEMs and IHVs (Intel, AMD, Qualcomm, NVIDIA, etc.) build and ship drivers. There is a tone more but too numerous to mention.
    • Now disable that stupid OneDrive backup request when Windows starts please. So unbelievably frustrating to only have “remind me later” instead of “no and never ask me again”
    • Hello, The Media Creation Tool is still at v10.0.26100.7019 from October 2025. Just looks like the backend has been updated. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky

    • That's just silly imo. The lengths that man goes to just to avoid W11 is just nuts. Very, very few home users would do that. I will say this though, he is committed. Btw, I note on askwoody that Woody Leonhard passed away March, 2025 aged 73. His site was one of my favorites back in the day. Belated yes but RIP Woody.
