Ha, I've made icons bigger then that, and they were high quality. I've made icons from scratch designed to work at 1024 x 1024 ;)

Of course, it messed up my laptop. 512 x 512 looked sweet though, I'll see if I've got any pictures of it lying around.

yeah, it should work with xp. perhaps you have to convert it to bmp, but i think that's not too big a problem, is it ;)
