March Desktops - 2005

Posting Guidelines:

  • If you plan to img-embed your desktop, please try to keep it under 100k (It's recommended that you link it, externally).
  • Stay within the board rules, no matter how yummy you may believe it to be.
  • If you are going to quote, there isn't a need to quote an img-embeded picture - Just don't do it. Please just reference the post by page number/page link/etc.

  • The desktops thread is not to be used as a means to post images of a pornographic or otherwise provocative nature. We do not support a babes forum and neither will we in an unofficial capacity. Please help to keep the thread relevant and safe to browse for everyone.
  • The moderators of this forum reserve the right to edit or remove your posts as necessary so they may comply with our Community Ruleset.
  • In the interests of keeping the thread on topic it is strongly urged that you format your posts in the following order:

sorry for interuppting but i knwo nothing about linux and i would just like to see a screenshot of linux in an unmodified form. preferably Suse as i am under the impression that every llinux looks different. can anyone help me or link?

all the pics i found did not really mention what they were or if they were modified in some way

There is no "default" look for linux. When you install linux you can choose to install one or more (or none) window managers or desktop environments - most distros will use gnome or kde by default, so to see a basic shot of them goto www.gnome.org or www.kde.org. Its not like in windows, where every default install looks the same.

Also, distros will often add their own branding to the graphical environments. You mentioned Suse above - they for example replace buttons which are used to launch system menus with their own logo, and install a different default theme to the one that is the official gnome or kde default theme.

So basically, there is no "unmodified" linux - there is no default. Its all about choice.

well the default KDE 3.3.2(latest stable) desktop looks like this http://kde.org/screenshots/images/3.3/snapshot3.png

but the only way to get a kde that looks that horrible is if you compile it yourself by hand. just about every distro customizes their KDE package and has a different wallpaper/icons/theme.

anyway, same old. made some icons bigger. showing my opera and OOo2 writer.

i want to hear from phate before i try it cause there might be something fedora-specific i need to do, and i dont feel like breaking x again.

anyway, that link is REALLY helpful cause it tells how to fix a problem i had with yoper in the prerelease. ill tell the devs so they can test it out. :yes:

I don't know whether it's universally applicable, but a combination of the xorg.conf entries:

Section Device

...(snipped)...
  
    Option     "AllowGLXWithComposite"      "true"
    Option     "RenderAccel"                "true"

& the usual:

Section "Extensions"
        
    Option          "Composite"     "Enable"
    Option          "RENDER"        "Enable

gives me the smoothest rendering whilst using a 6800GT. YMMV, relatively speaking, and all the other hypothetical idioms. ;)

By default loading the composite extension will disable GLX. So you can have no 3D rendering while using composite. But putting in AllowGLXWithComposite will bypass this and load GLX. SO no, it doesn't speed up rendering of stuff drawn by compsite manager, but it does allow you to play 3D games with composite extension enabled.

hmmm, so could that explain why I've been just receving black screens with a cursor for tuxracer :D ? thanks

EDIT: nvm, tuxracer doesn't work either way :/

      It won't perform hugely better than the 3080 unless you're VRAM limited in games. Have you tried putting new thermal pads on them 3080 and giving it a good clean to see if you can regain your temps and overclock?

      Windows 95 offered the ability to add and edit the right click menus, on a per file type basis. This feature seems to be missing in the new file explorer. Are they bringing it back as a "new" feature?

      It's nearly time to replace my aging Founders Edition 3080, it doesn't OC as nicely as it used to and it's running around 10c warmer than it did when I first bought it.  I don't have budget for much more than what I spent on the 3080 and locally, that means the best GPU I can manage is a 9070XT. On this basis I have a few questions: 1. At present I don't use ray tracing, if this was to change, would this GPU be an issue? 2. How does it compare on a performance basis? 3. Are the drivers worse or better than those for nVidia? 4. Linux support, is it there? 5. Anything else I should be aware of if I were to make this change? 6. Is it a good idea or shall I try and keep the 3080 a little longer.

      What OS is that? It looks a bit like Mac OS but the command line suggests it isn't, either way I like it!
