Xplorer

A. HOW TO MAKE XPLORER? YOUR DEFAULT FOLDER APPLICATION

xplorer? can easily handle all the regular filesystem folders. If you want to launch x2 every time you click on a folder icon (e.g. on your desktop) add an "open" verb for the "Directory" file type, and have its default value point to the path where you have installed x2:

create this key with regedit:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\open\command]

set this (Default) value:

"C:\Program files\zabkat\xplorer2\xplorer2.exe" /T /1 "%1"

(your installation path may differ; your executable may be called xplorer2_UC.exe; please check your installation folder)

Note that "%1" is required (including the quotation marks), and is replaced by the folder path you are trying to open. /T causes no tabs to be restored and /1 forces single pane mode (you don't have to use these switches but they make sense).

Finally make sure this "open" verb is the default for file folders as such:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell]

@="open"

...From registry.txt in xplorer2 folder, lots of other useful tweaks there.

A. HOW TO MAKE XPLORER? YOUR DEFAULT FOLDER APPLICATION...

Wouldn't process explorer.exe still be running the background in order for you to click on the desktop icons...

So if im not mistaken, for order to have just xplorer or any other file manager instead of explorer, you would also need to replace shell and then configurate shell replace to use xplorer as default folder application...

If you want to try something unknown, try Servant Salamander. It probably can't do anything that TotalCmd wouldn't know, but for whatever reason I like it more.

Its homepage

I believe the old version is now free (it's english): http://www.altap.cz/ftp/salamand/salam152.zip

The current version is 2.0 and there is also a beta of new version to try, with much more functionality. v 2.5 beta7

My vote is for Windows Explorer. It's the only one which starts with WinKey+E (without any other apps ofcourse), loads the fastest, and has everything I need for a file manager. Any additional required functionality can easily be added by some simple registry editing, so I don't really see the need for a 3rd party file manager. Anyway, I think its looks the best.

But, if you do want to use a 3rd party file manager, I'd also suggest A43 File Manager. It's what I've set up in my PE CD and it's pretty good at what it does.

I don't think I could live without the multi-file renaming tool in Total Commander or its built in FTP capabilities. Once you get used to how it works and all the shortcuts, it becomes a very powerful and flexible way of browsing and managing your files.

I use TC and Windows Explorer though, depending on what I'm doing.

    • Indeed - drives me mad - usually because Refresh is hidden in the full menu.
    • Firefox has had rounded corners for many years. I take it you're not a fan of modern browsers?
    • The problem is in the fundamentals of how businesses are allowed to operate and the change should happen in the basics and certain consumer friendly and moral practices should be enforced by law. This would fix so many things, not just this ages old default browser issue which is a tiny drop in the backut that includes a flood of privacy and other issues.
